WILLIAM BARNWELL
Sheriff from 2001-current




William Barnwell has served as Montcalm County sheriff since 2001. He has lived in Montcalm County most of his life and graduated from Central Montcalm High School in 1972. He began his law enforcement career with the sheriff's office in 1974 as a Dispatcher. Since then he had held nearly every position within the sheriff's office including Corrections Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Jail Commander, 911/Central Dispatch Director and Undersheriff. Sheriff Barnwell also served for 12 years on the sheriff's Underwater Search and Rescue Team.

He is a graduate of the National Sheriff's Institute and is the current chairman of the Central Michigan Enforcement Team, which is a multi-jurisdictional Drug Task Force that includes the counties of Montcalm, Newaygo, Mecosta and Ionia. He is also a member of the Michigan Municipal League Law Enforcement Action Forum and currently serves as the chairman of the Southern Committee. Bill is a second-generation law enforcement officer following in the footsteps of his father, the late Tom Barnwell, who also served as sheriff of Montcalm County from 1969 through 1980. He is a member of the Montcalm County Republican Party and a member and past president of the Stanton Rotary Club. He also served for 21 years in the United States Naval Reserve and retired in 1999 as a Chief Petty Officer. Bill is married and has a son, a daughter and a step-daughter.
