This is a photo from Pam Black that was taken on the main corner in "downtown Montague" as the kids we let out of school to go home for lunch on 12 March 1910. From Pam- The photo was taken by an itinerant photographer, who is unknown. The photo was placed on a post card as was common in that era and sold to the families of the children involved. The only one that I can identify is my mother, Edith Fehrenbach, who is the second from the left in the front row. She lived on North Hill, tho at the time of the photo they was likely living right down town about where the city hall stands today. Edith's father was Simon Fehrenbach and he ran the jewelry store which stood just out of sight around the corner in this photo, in the building that was next to Lipka's drug store. There was a hardware store there in the 1950's. The next shop was Charlie Ohrenberger's bar. I believe that Charlie's son ran the hardware store. Simon left Montague after his wife died in 1918 and went to Muskegon and ultimately to Detroit. My mother stayed with the younger children, got them thru school in Montague.Her older brother, George ran the "last of the mills" on the White River. He did not close it down until some time in the 1960's!!!!! The site is now a park with a plaque telling of the mill. Since my father's family was in Whitehall from the mid 1880's I have scads of photos of people that I have no idea who they are. Plus a good number that I can identify.
