Picard Sr., 65, of L'Anse, was taken into the arms of the Lord May 18, 2001 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital following a long illness. Louis was born into life September 19, 1935 in L'Anse, son of the late Charles and Nora (Demmery) Picard. He was a lifetime area resident and attended L'Anse schools. Louis served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean conflict and was stationed in Japan. He was most recently Supervisor of the Commodity Food warehouse in Zeba. Louis was a member of the Blessed Kateri Catholic Church, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, VFW Post 3897, and L'Anse Ojibwa Senior Citizens. He was a former Tribal Council member and member of HUD. On January 4, 1960, he married the former Gerlinda Bleich in Waukegan, IL. Louis enjoyed many leisure activities including hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling, boating, 31 and bingo. Louis is survived by his loving wife of 41 years Gerlinda (Linda); 4 daughters, Karen Curtis of Zeba, Lori Picard of L'Anse, Sharon (John) Misegan of Marquette and Rose Picard of L'Anse; 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by sisters Fanchon Boyette of Milwaukee, WI, Lorraine (Richard) Francis of L'Anse and Lillian (Steve) Verbanac, also of L'Anse. Numerous neices, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded by a son Louis Jr., brother Dr. Charles Picard, sister Helene Welsh and a son-in-law Bob Curtis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am Monday from the Most Holy Name of Jesus Church, Assinins, with Father Greg Heikkila, celebrant. Mr. Picard's grandsons will be casket bearers and interment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, L'Anse. The family will recieve friends at the church Sunday, May 20, 2001 from 6 until 9 pm. Area veterans will conduct military rites at 7 pm followed by Native American ceremonies and rosary services. The Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse, assisted the family with arrangements.
