"AL" MORIN, 87, of L'Ance, MI. passed away Friday, February 27, 2004 following a lengthy illness at Baraga County Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit. He was born in L'Anse, MI. on June 8, 1916 son of the late Hector and Helen (DeCota) Morin. Al attended the L'Anse area schools. In his younger days, Al was a member of the CCC and worked on the building of U.S. 41 north of Baraga. During WWII, Al served in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the Merchant Marine vessel Gateway City as a cook and baker. He was discharged in 1944. On April 26, 1948, he married the former Elizabeth James in Detroit. She preceded him in death in 1994. Al spent several years in the California area as a superintendent of a steel manufacturing company, where he also owned and operated a bar. In Detroit, he was employed for a time as a bus driver. In Baraga, he owned a restaurant and motel for a while. He retired in 1972. Al was a 4-H director for several years as well as involved with the Senior Parks and Recreation Association. In 2001, he was honored at the Ojibwa Pow-Wow as the oldest tribal elder. Al was a member of KBIC, Ojibwa Senior Citizens, and American Legion Baraga Post #444. Mr. Morin is survived by his children James of Alaska, Pete of Baraga, Ronald (Cheryl) of Liberty, Ohio, Richard of Toronto, ONT., and Donna; sisters Margaret Ross and Mary Walker both of Baraga and Marcella of southern California. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 daughters, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Funeral services for Mr. Morin were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2004 from the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Father Heikkala officiating. Spring interment will take place in the Baraga Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday, March 2, 2004 from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
