Submitted by Rose Edwards mailto:baragarose@up.net ************************************************************************ Dowd, Sandy (July 14, 1953-October 22, 2003) SANDRA ANN DOWD, 50, of Baraga passed away at her residence following a lengthy illness Wednesday morning, October 22, 2003. She was born in Houghton, MI. on July 14, 1953 daughter of the late James and Frances (Jondreau) Cardinal. She attended Baraga Area Schools and was a lifetime area resident. Sandra was employed at the Ojibwa Senior Citizens as a cook for 28 years until her retirement in July 2003 due to illness. Sandra was a member Holy Name of Jesus Church, a member of the church culture club, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, and sat on the Ojibwa Housing Commission for over 5 years. She was the KBIC wild rice queen. She was active with the Ojibwa Senior Citizens, enjoyed flower gardening, traveling, and was involved in the Cancer Walk for Life Program. Above all she was a dedicated grandmother. She will also be missed by her dog, Snoopy. Sandra is survived by her daughter, Ann Hovey of Assinins, grandchildren, Lindsay and Brighton, brother; Mike (Agatha) Cardinal of Assinins, sisters; LaVerne Meger of Ishpeming, Carol (Larry) Theel of San Diego, CA., Elizabeth Sullivan of Wauwatosa, WI., Eleanor Moede of Baraga, and sister-in-law; Nora Cardinal of Big Bay. Her brother, James "Cobb" Cardinal Jr, preceded her in death. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2003 from Holy Name of Jesus Church, Assinins, MI. with Father Greg Heikkala officiating. Interment will take place in Assinins Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening at the church from 6 until 8 p.m. and for 1 hour prior to the Mass on Saturday. A parish prayer service will be recited at 6:30 p.m. at the church on Friday.
