Richard Gravelle died in Ford River, MI just days before he was to be committed to the Upper Penesula Hospital Asylum in 1909. He and his brother Alexander were shot in a bar fight , where Alex died and Richard live, tho shot in the head. Richard was married to Cath Carter in WI and she died in Ford River in 1906. Richard and Cath's children were sent to Mt. Pleasant School. There were supposedly alot of relatives in Escanaba, Mi. the names were Willie Carter, Elizabeth and Herman Liesner, Joseph Carter. There was an article in the newspaper when Richard and Alex were shot, when Richard died, and in the 1930's when an article was written about Ford River's past. I would like to find copies of these articles and try to contact any family that may be around there.

The Gravelle's lived in "Breed Town" or "Indian Town" across the river from Ford River Proper. I would like to get a map of the area as it existed in the 1900-1910 era if possible.

I have not given enough info please contact me, as I have more about the Gravelle's but nothing on the Carters. Thank you. Charlene Wamhoff Posted 16 Aug 1997

Looking for these NA names and possible NA names connected to Michigan and Canada...all time frames are between 1840-1860's

Catherine GAGNON (known to be NA-seeking to confirm tribal affiliation as Ojibwe)

Oliver MOORE (Catherine's husband-called the "Englishman"-thought he was from England, but have found that this was also a common nickname for a "half-breed" )

Louise BESON (not known as NA, but found many Beson's at Lac du Flambeau res)

Frank FURTAW (or Francis...was illiterate, so spelling probably an attempt at Forteau or Fortier...known to be French...suspect that he was mixed blood...pictures of him look fairly Native...he was a lumberjack.)

Levi Reaume ( not know as NA, but name has NA connections )

Minnie Newton ( No knowledge of her whatsoever...she was Levi's wife )

Any info into these family names would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, 'Nee Posted 25 Sep 1997.
