The Ashland Post Office was established in 1855, with John Betts as Postmaster. The Post Office was located about one mile northwest of what is now Grant. John Betts Sr. and Charles B. Seaman operated a tavern and a store there. This settlement was a stop on the Grand Rapids, Northport and Newaygo Stage Line and was called Ashland Station. The stage stop was also located about one-half mile south of a settlement that was called Lambson. The Post Office was discontinued on April 1, 1873. On April 16th, 1873, Joel Fellows re-established the post office in his home at Lambson. In Oct. of 1874 Henry H. Fellows became Postmaster and the office was moved to his house just north of where Grant is located today, by the railroad. In Nov. of 1876, Mr. Fellows, in order to get a store located at this location, offered to resign his post-mastership in favor of Frank Gardner, provided that Mr. Gardner would build a store there. An 1864 map of Michigan shows this settlement to be called Brighton. The Post Office was called Ashland until 1892, then the name was change to Grant Station. The name was changed again in 1899 to Grant. Grant is still a post office with a Zip Code of 49327.
