Dickinson Post Office 1888-1901

By Terry E. Wantz

This was a small settlement in the center of section 30 of Ashland Township. William Reiley had a general store here and on the 31st. of May 1888 he established Dickinson Post Office in his store. William Reiley was the only Postmaster and the office was discontinued on June 29th., 1901, with the mail going to Grant. The Dickinsons were a early family who help settle Newaygo County and there is the Dickinson Road which run through Ashland Township. It is hard to say if the Post Office was named after the Dickinson Family or the Dickinson Road of if the road was named after the Post Office? Nothing remain of the Settlement now. The old Dickinson School is still standing near this location.
