LUMBERTON

By Terry E. Wantz

Lumberton Post Office was established May 17, 1880 at Norwich siding in Section 20 of Norwich Township on the Chicago and West Michigan Railroad half way between Woodville and Hungerford.

Before 1880 there was a saw mill, boarding house, saloon and a General Store for the mill hands. This was known as "lumber town" and when the post office was established they need a name so they just called it "Lumberton".

Daniel J. Reichert was the first Postmaster and follow by George D. Miles on November 22, 1880, Archibald Campbell February 4, 1884 and the last Postmaster was Henry A. Dailey on May 26, 1886. The office closed November 19, 1886 with the mail going to Woodville.
