James Robertson, an old resident of this county passed away at his home, 110 East Pine Street, on Saturday, August 13, 1932, at the age of 84 years. He was in ill health for the previous ten years but during the last two years his illness became more serious. He was confined to bed only a week before his death.
Mr. Robertson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, February 19, 1848, and came to the United States when he was four years of age. At that time the period for crossing the Atlantic was five weeks and two days. He was an old settler of Denver township where he resided on a farm eight miles north of this city for 38 years, having come to Newaygo in 1856. He was prominent in political activities and community interests during his residence there, having been director of his school district for five years in succession and at various other times. He was treasurer of Newaygo County for two years and also administered a number of estates.
On December 26, 1872, Mr. Robertson was married to Miss Estella MaCumber who survived him. He was also survived by six children, namely, George of Denver Township, Mrs. Jennie Wellman of Detroit, Mrs. Frank Preston of Fremont, James of East Lansing, Mrs. Andrew Skinner of Jackson, and Neal Robertson, Birmingham; twelve grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Jennie Woodworth of Marquette.
Mr. Robertson had been a resident of Fremont for the past 22 years.
