Another Civil War veteran answered his last roll call December 28, 1922,
when Nathan Lovell died after a few minutes illness of heart trouble.
Mr. Lovell was born in New York state on September 13, 1843, moving from
there to Kent county, Michigan and later residing in Morley, Goodwell
township and for a number of years in White Cloud.
He was married in 1865 to Rachel Stowers and six children survive; Mrs.
Vina Wilson and Frank Lovell of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Alice Wiley of
Rockford, Mrs. Minnie Sofe of Chicago and William and James Lovell of
White Cloud. He also leaves his widow, three sistes, one brother, 23
grand children, 21 great grand children and one great-great grandchild,
all of whom were here to attend the funeral services. Besides being a member of the G.A.R., Mr. Lovell was a member of the Methodist church where his funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. Joe Payne officiating. The remains were buried at Prospect Hill cemetery with the following acting as pallbears: Maurice Slade, J.J. Terwillegar, Clarence Sanford, A.H. Courtney, George Shannon and E.I. Coles. In the book of record of the Second Michigan Cavalry we find: Nathan Lovell (veteran), Kent county, enlisted in Company E 2nd Cavalry September 23, 1861, of Grand Rapids for three years, age 18. Mustered October 17, 1865. Present residence White Cloud. |
