Many times, during our various trips to antique stores, yard sales or estate auctions, we run across items that have no connection to our own family, but pique our interest as we know that they belong to someone. This page will be available for posting those "found treasures" for Oceana Co., with hopes of returning and/or sharing them with a descendant. |
Please Note.... "For Sale" items will not be posted, but costs for reimbursement (postage etc.) would be acceptable. |
STANHOPE Posted 5/00 |
I have no connection with "Stanhope" except that my mother had in her possession, when she died, a Journal or account book that had belonged to a person named Erwin Stanhope. The book is from the period of about 1873 to 1885. It appears that Erwin was a fairly successful famer in Oceana, County, Michigan. He mentions Hart and Shelby and Muskegon and Cass County. There is very little "Family" information but there is a reference to his mother, a Mrs.Nancy J. Stanhope; and to a Miranda and to an Erwin who may have been a son.
This account book names a lot of local people with whom he had dealings on a daily basis, plus information on everything from day labor wages and the price of eggs to the cost of recording a deed and the going price of land..It would be of interest to any Michigan historical society but in particular to the Oceana county area . I would be happy to share this information. |
