She was united in 1862 and to this union three children were born of whom two, Mrs. Lucy Harjes and Charles W. Tallant are living. John Tallant died Dec. 2, 1869. She was married to Austin Niles in 1870. To this union three children were born of whom two, Mrs. Phoebe Pratt and Mrs. Jane Harjes are living. During her long residence in Oceana county, Mrs. Niles endeared herself to all acquaintances by her splendid qualities and kindly helpfulness and will be mourned by many outside her immediate family circle. Smith, the son of Timothy Smith and Harriett Abigail Greene, was born in the state of New York, May 9th 1849 and departed this life at his home in Ferry, Michigan, May 19, 1926 at the age of 77 years and 10 days. He came with his parents to Cass County, Michigan in 1860 and from Cass County to his present home in 1864 where he has since resided. He was married to Elizabeth Pickel July 4, 1871 by the Rev. Darling. This Union proved a happy one, Mrs. Smith being a loving and faithful companion. To this Union was born one daughter, Mrs. Minnie Hedges, with whom he has resided since the death of his wife which occurred January 17, 1906. Smith was born in Oneida County, New York and when a small boy removed with his parents to Yates County, New York in the year of 1856. In 1861 they removed to Cass County, Michigan and in 1864 the family moved to Ferry, Oceana County where Mr. Smith has since resided. In 1877 he was married to Elizabeth Pickel, a most estimable woman who died June 17, 1906. Minnie E. Smith, their only child was born in 1878 and still lives with and keeps house for her father. Mr. Smith is an up to date farmer. His farm consistin of 236 acres of excellent farming land, 1st class buildings and everything that goes to make life worth living. He has been chosen many times to various offices in the township treasurer and 6 years as supervisor. In 1896 he was nominated a candidate for Representative in the state legislature by the prohibition party which nomination was indorsed by the democrate party. The writer of this sketch has been associated with Mr. Smith for many years in a social way as well as in an official capacity and does most unqualifiedly pronounce him a man of high character and unusual ability. He is successful in looking after his own affairs and gives to every official position. The same conscientious care and painstaking effort that he does to his own interest. Mr. Smith always stands for what he believes will be for the material and moral advancement of the community. He is a good neighbor, a firm friend and an unflinching advocate of justice and square dealing. Burt died in Grand Rapids on Thursday, April 16, 1931 at the age of 59 years 2 months 25 days of age. At the age of fourteen, he came to Pentwater where he spent the early years of his life. In 1910 he was elected to the office of County Clerk and continued in this position for sixteen years. He was one of the most popular officers in the county and very efficient in the discharge of his duties. After leaving the clerk’s office he was with the Michigan War Board four years. In 1920 he accepted a position with W. R. Roach & Co. in Grand Rapids which he held until his death last week. About 33 years ago he was united in marriage to Miss Laura Dumont at Pentwater. Laura preceded him in death about 5 years ago. They had three children: Stuart and Burt Jr. and Mrs. Dorothy Zomerhuis. About two years ago he was married the 2nd time and his wife died suddenly about 3 weeks ago from an attack of Psittacosis, Parrot Fever and it is believed that he became infected at that time which caused his sudden death. A sizeable crowd was present at the old Mouth cemetery Wednesday afternoon for the ceremony of unveiling a marker at the grave of Mrs. Betsy Hadley Sumner, pioneer resident of White River Township, who was the daughter and granddaughter of Revolutionary war soldiers. The marker was the gift of the Muskegon chapter, D. A. R. A number of D. A. R. members were present as well as a number of residents of the district. Mrs. Bessie Austin, a great-granddaughter of Mrs. Sumner, read a biography of the gifted pioneer woman and Ellamae Dahl, a great-granddaughter, unveiled the marker. Mrs. M. E. K. Gunn gave an appropriate reading. Ed Meinert, supervisor of White River Township, spoke briefly, and taps were sounded by George Hutchinson of Muskegon. Mrs. Mary Loomis, chaplain of the Muskegon chapter, gave the invocation and closing remarks. Mrs. Thomas Stead, Jr., of Muskegon Heights, regent, was in charge of the ceremony. Sleeper, Alma E. November 29, 1940 Mrs. Alma Sleeper Pioneer Mears Resident Passes last Thursday. Mrs. Alma Sleeper was born Alma Eunice June in Berrien County, Michigan on Christmas Day in 1862. She with her parents and two brothers came to Oceana County when she was about 7 years old. They began the pioneer life in a settlement around the saw mill located at Round Lake. Many are the accounts of Pioneer days she has related. She was a member of the Pioneer Association and always looked forward with keen enjoyment to the Old Settlers Picnic each year. She was married to Loren R. Holcomb in 1880 and to this union was born 3 sons, four daughters, .2 sons Cyrus E. and Arvid L. preceding her in death. Early in their home life they both gave their heart to their Savior. They helped establish the West Golden Church. In 1939 her first husband died. A year later she married Azra R. Sleeper.
