OTSEGO LAKE
TOWNSHIP CEMETERY is located 4/10 of
a mile east of US 27 on Old State Road. (Just east over
the I-75 Expressway on the north side) The Cemetery was
dedicated to the village of Otsego Lake by William H.
Gratwick and Edward Smith of the Gratwick, Smith &
Fryer Lumber Company of Detroit, Michigan on January 31,
1880. The cemetery was either used prior to the official
dedication or a grave was transferred there as one
gravestone has the year 1878. The old cemetery records were destroyed by fire. Numerous graves are unknown. A listing compiled in 1989 for the Otsego County Historical Society by a combined effort of Ilah N. Davey, Kathleen Packman, Cecelia Schotte, Carrie & Kenneth White and Dorothy Merry and recorded by M. J. Luzenski was obtained from the Otsego County record of deaths occuring in Otsego Lake Township from 1876 to 1934 and eliminating any names appearing on other cemetery listings. A listing of these deaths are contained in the cemetery records at the Otsego County Library and there are 182 names listed. The 1989 compilation includes approximately 243 gravesites, of which 164 are verified. Possibly 43 United States War Veterens are buried there. At present only lots in the new section are used. |
