LAWRENCE MENZIES
Lawrence Menzies, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Menzies, died Sunday morning following an accident about seven o'clock Saturday night, when he crashed into the back of a wagon, about two miles north of Gaylord. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Congregational Church by Rev. Ozro Priest, assisted by Elder Allen Schreur. Burial was made in the family lot at the Vanderbilt Cemetery. Lawrence Menzies was born May 15, 1913 at Vanderbilt, where he lived until a few years ago when he moved to Gaylord with his parents, where he has since resided. He is survived by his parents, three sisters, Marguerite, Lillian and Elaine, and two brothers, Harold and Billie, and countless other relatives and friends who grieve with the immediate family over the untimely death of this young man. Reports of the accident state that Lawrence with Harry Thren, riding the back seat, were going north about seven o'clock Saturday night. As they topped the Cummings Hill, their lights were thrown into the air and they failed to see a wagon until it was too late. Lawrence attempted to swing to the left, but was unable to get far enough over, the front wheel of the motorcycle striking the hub of the hind wheel, throwing the young man straight up in the air. He came down on the back of his head. Young Thren was thrown about thirty feet, but landed in soft sand in the ditch, and escaped injury except for a sprained finger. The wagon was driven by Tony Kosiara, and carried no light, was pulled off the road, the team unhitched and driven home. Young Menzies never regained consciousness. Friends and relatives from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Sherman and family of East Jordan, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Menzies and son Bruce of Newberry, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Menzies of Muskegon, Mrs. Daisy Menzies, daughter Lois and son Carleton of Owosso, and numerous friends and relatives of Vanderbilt. |
