Samuel R. Sanford

Pg. 475-475 - One of the honored pioneers of Muskegon County, was born inWayne County, NY, August 11, 1922, and is a son of Isaac R. Sanford, a native ofConnecticut. His mother, Patience Atwater was also born in Connecticut. Heresided in Muskegon City and is known as a progressive business man.

On the 1st of October, 1884, Mr. Sanford married Miss Susan S.Huggins, a native of Wayne County, NY and a daughter of Zadok Huggins. She diedJuly 18, 1855, leaving two children: Ransom now a resident of Muskegon and AnnaM., wife of Harvey Chatten, ant architect of Quincy, Ill. His second marriagetook place July 7, 1858, his wife being Miss Ambrosia Peck, of Gorham, OntarioCo., NY. Her father being Samuel B. Peck. Two children have been born to them:Arthur H. and Nellie S.

In the fall of 1846 Mr. Sanford was elected Clerk of Kent County on theDemocratic ticket, and filled that position until the fall of 1848, that beingthe time of his removal from the city. In 1858 he was elected Sheriff of OttawaCounty, which at that time comprised the counties of Muskegon and Ottawa, butduring his term of service the present division was made, and he removed toGrand Haven temporarily in order to complete his term. In the performance ofthe duties of this office he always traveled on foot, unless having a prisonerin charge, and under no circumstances ever carried a weapon of defense. As a ‘walkist’he was for many years unrivaled. In public office he has always been found trueto the trust reposed in him, and has discharged his duties with promptness andfidelity.

Although reared in accordance with the tenets of the Methodist EpiscopalChurch, he never accepted its creed, but has been liberal in his benefactions toall the churches of the city of his home. In 1885 he became a believer.
