Civil War Enlistments from Polkton Township Who Died in Service

Last week we mentioned the visit here of Wm. O. Van Eyck, from Holland, and the work he is doing in getting complete records of all who entered the service from Ottawa County. At that time we mentioned that there were thirty-seven from Polkton Township who died in service, but a re-check makes it only thirty-two. Mr. Van Ecyk has furnished the Observer the record of each one as given below:

 

Hezekiah Ackley—Co. B, 5th MI Cavalry, 1864. (enlisted from Kent County) Died at Stevensburg, Virginia, April 12, 1864.

Samuel Andrews—Unassigned, 10th MI Cavalry, 1865. Died at Nashville, Tennessee, March 10, 1865.

Larimy C. Brigham—Co. B, 3rd MI Infantry, 1861-5. Died August 5, 1865, of wounds, near Burkeville, Virginia.

Henry O. Britton—Co. G, 21st MI Infantry, 1862. Killed at Chickamauga, Georgia, September 20, 1863.

Abijah Brott—Co. E, 21st MI Infantry, 1862. Died of disease at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, July 15, 1863.

Anthony Brott—Co. K, Lincoln Cavaly (New York regiment), 1861. Died in Andersonville Prison, May 19, 1864.

William D. Brott—Co. G, 21st MI Infantry, 1862. Sick and despondent, shot himself at Edgefield, Tennessee, November 19, 1862.

James Burns—Co. D, 6th MI Cavalry, 1864. Killed at Trevillian Station, Virginia, June 12, 1864.

Joseph B. Cady— Co. G, 21st MI Infantry, 1862, Died of disease at New York Harbor, June 28, 1865.

Silas A. Carr—Co. C, 21st MI Infantry, 1864. Died of disease at Indianapolis, Indiana, September 3, 1864.

Hiram G. Castle— Co. G, 21st MI Infantry, 1862. Discharged for disability April 15, 1863. Died at home October 3, 1864. Buried at Eastmanville, Eastmanville Cemetery.

Clifton E. Fisk—Co. I, 10th MI Cavalry, 1865. Died at Knoxville, Tennessee, April 18, 1865.

Franklin H. Garrison—Co. G, 21st MI Infantry, 1862. Died at Newbern, North Carolina, May 1, 1865.

James Giddes—Co. L, 10th MI Cavalry. Died at Louisville, Kentucky, August 26, 1865.

Frederick Griswold—Co. F, 14th MI Infantry, 1861. Died of wounds received at Franklin, Tennessee, February 11, 1863.

Perry D. Griswold—Co. E, Michigan Sharpshooters, 1863. Died of wounds received at Spotsylvania, May 12, 1864.

William H. Himmelburger—Co. I, 1st MI Cavalry, 1861. Died at Knoxville, Maryland, September 20, 1862.

John S. Hopkins—1st Co. Sharpshooters, 16th MI Infantry, 1861. Died December 14, 1862.

Albert H. Lawton—Co. G, 21st MI Infantry, 1862. Died of disease at Nashville, Tennessee, December 9, 1862.

James Lyons—Co. F, 6th MI Cavalry, 1864. Killed in action July 30, 1864.

George W. Neal—Co. G, 6th MI Cavalry, 1864. Died of disease at Washington, D. C., April 23, 1864.

George Platt—Co. A, 10th MI Cavalry, 1863. Died at Knoxville, Tennessee, September 1, 1864.

Charles Randall—Co. B, 3rd MI Infantry, 1861. Died at Harrison’s Landing, Virginia, August 3, 1862.

Frederick Rankans—Co. B, 3rd MI Infantry, 1862. Killed at Stmr Sultana, near Memphis, Tennessee, April 27, 1865.

Lewis Sharrotts—Co. K, MI Engineers and Mechanics, 1864. Died of disease at Ringgold, Georgia, July 16, 1864.

Alonzo D. Smith—Co. A, 7th MI Cavalry, 1865. Died of disease at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, June 2, 1865.

William Stevenson—Co. G, 6th MI Cavalry, 1864. Died at Washington, D. C. April 23, 1864.

Zenas Sweet—Co. G, 21st MI Infantry. Died of disease at Nashville, Tennessee, January 30, 1863.

Reuben Toogood—Co. G, 21st Infantry, 1862. Died at Nashville, Tennessee, January 15, 1863.

Benjamin Van Halteren—Co. D, 2nd MI Cavalry, 1861. Wounded at Perryville, Kentucky. Died of wounds November 17, 1862. Buried at Eastmanville, Eastmanville Cemetery.

Gerrit Van Halteren—Co. D, 2nd MI Cavalry, 1862. Prisoner 1864. Died at Andersonville Prison.

Robert Watson—Co. I, 10th MI Cavalry, 1865. Killed by bushwhackers near Salem, Virginia, April 14, 1865.
