Eliza Woodbury The gravestone of Eliza Woodbury reads: "Separated
from her earthly house. Eliza, wife of Thomas B. Woodbury died February
10, 1844, age 32 years and 9 months. Her last woods were 'Goodby, Thomas, until
we meet again.''' Eliza Woodbury is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Lamont,
Michigan. T. B. Woodbury came to the Landing during the spring
of 1835 and took up the land west of the Quarter Line to the Town Line and from
the river to the Section Line. He built the second log house and a pretty frame
house west of the second store built by Luther and Hinsdale. Mr. Woodbury also
built a large grist mill west of his house on the river and then later moved
into another house overlooking the river. Here he lived until the grist mill
burned, leaving him destitute. He moved to Fruitport where I hear he passed
away. Mr. Woodbury was a man of taste, a gentleman and a
scholar. He ran through the village a wide Avenue, which is as I can see, still
a well traveled street and beauty spot, with its beautiful dogwood gracing a
well-kept boulevard. Lamont on the Grand 1835-1960 by the Lamont Civic
Association. According to research by Loekie Boersma, Thomas
Woodbury was a man of considerable wealth. Thomas had a road made from his house
on the Grand River up to the public highway (River Road) at his expense in
November 1842. He invested all his money in a grist mill and when it burned
down, Thomas was destitute. Thomas married Martha and according to divorce records
of Ottawa County was divorced from Martha on January 1, 1855. According to the 1860 U. S. Federal Census of
Tallmadge Township, Thomas, age 52, is listed with a new wife, Delphinia, age
41, born in New York, Also living in the home was Sarah Jane Woodbury, age 18,
daughter of Thomas and Eliza. According to the 1870 U. S. Federal Census of
Vergennes Township, Kent County, Thomas is living with his fourth wife, Mary and
his daughter Sarah. Coopersville Observer, March 30, 1888, Lamont--Thomas
