Roana D. Woodward Gravestone Inscription: Roana D. Woodward, wife of G.
W. Woodward, died May 4, 1849, aged 24 years. Roana Woodward is buried in
Elmwood Cemetery, Lamont, Michigan Oceana County, Oceana Pioneers and Businessmen
of Today, by Hartwick and Tuller, 1890 George Warren Woodward was born in Ellery, Chautauqua
County, New York, the son of Daniel and
Margaret Woodward. He came to
Michigan in 1843 and in 1845 moved to Ottawa County
where he remained until 1872. In 1845 he was married to Roana Nowlen who died
soon afterward. (May 4, 1849) In 1852 he married Martha Bullen, his present
wife. He now has three
children living, one son and two daughters. His daughter,
Ida, has been known in the county as a earnest and effective temperance worker.
Military Records--On October 21, 1861, George Woodward
enlisted at Grand Rapids in Co. D, 1st Michigan Engineers. He mustered out June
18, 1862, at Nashville. He enlisted at Grand Haven on August 8, 1862, and he was
commissioned an officer in Company G, 21st Michigan Infantry, as 2nd Lieutenant,
promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant, promoted to Captain and promoted to Brevet
Major. He mustered out January 8, 1865, at Washington D. C. He has been honored with many offices in civil life,
having been elected and held offices in Ottawa, Kent and Oceana counties.
(George was the first postmaster of Marne, Ottawa, MI.) George W. Woodward died July 17, 1901, in Shelby,
Oceana, Michigan.
