Rush Beals Rush Beals was born in New York and came to Michigan in the 1850's. According to Loekie Boersma, Rush purchased land in Tallmadge Township from Edward and Martha Andrews, who had come from Iowa. They had one child, Eugene Andrews. After Edward Andrews died, Rush Beals married his widow, Martha, and her son became known as Eugene Andrews Beals. Rush and Martha had a son, Guy Beals, born in 1859 and a daughter, Mera Belle Beals, born 1865. Rush Beals purchased additional land in Muskegon. His step-son, Eugene, who died May 11, 1860, and his daughter, Mera Belle, who died January 12, 1865, are buried with him in the same lot in Elmwood Cemetery, Lamont, MI. Horatio Beals is also listed on the U. S. Civil War draft registration records of Tallmadge Township age 44, born in New York, laborer, wife Patty. There is no record of Civil War service. Horatio Beal died April 1880, in Muskegon, Michigan, of chronic rheumatism, according to his death records. He is buried in Clinton County, Muskegon. 1860 U. S. Census, Lamont.
