North Street Christian Reformed Church
North Street church was organized 17 March 1882 with 46 families from the First Reformed Church of Zeeland. It came from a Reformed church but became a Christian Reformed Church soon after organizing. Rev. A. Zwemer, pastor of Graafschap Holland Reformed Church was the moderator. The following were the first consistory: Elders – H. VanNoorden, B. Poest, H. Yntema and K. LaHuis; Deacons – D. VanLoo, C. DeKoster, M. VandenBosch and T. Dykhuizen. At first services were held in the former Townline Schoolhouse, one mile north of Zeeland and later at the home of Melle VandenBosch on North Street (now known as Main Avenue). A house at 235 E. Main was purchased for a parsonage and behind this a church was built. This building is now the Wyngarden Hatchery. It was enlarged two times, and served the congregation for 27 years. On 15 October 1882, the congregation received approval and was accepted into the Christian Reformed Church. In 1909 it was decided to build a new church, parsonage and horse stable on land previously purchased at State and Main Streets. This new church was dedicated 12 January 1910 and a new organ purchased in 1911. Early ministers were: John Isaac (1882-1889); John Riemersma (1890-1891); Klaas Kreulen (1892-1898); John B. Jonkman (1899-1906); John Smitter (1908-1916); John H. Geerlings (1916-1919). |
