Second Reformed Church
Zeeland, Michigan
In 1903 committees began working to provide a new English church for the
Reformed denomination and on 12 September 1904 one was organized with 104
members. Some of the names were: Boonstra, Bouwen, DenHerder, VanDyke,
Hartgerink, Keppel, DePree, Veneklasen, and Cook. The new consistory, on 4 October 1904, resolved to erect a church building
and three months later it was completed and but for $14.38 was paid for. The men
of the church did much of the work and the women brought food for them. The
first service was held 18 December 1904 in the edifice. In 1911 a second
building was erected and an organ installed due to the growth of the
congregation and a third church building was erected in 1952. In 1907 the Rev. Henry DePree and his wife were supported by the church as
missionaries to China where they served for forty years. Early ministers were: Dr. William Moerdyk, who was called in 1905. Others
were Benjamin Hoffman, Clarence Austin, Richard VandenBerg, D.D., and William
Hilmert.
