ALLEN Family The Allen family—father James T., mother Fannie and sons Robert Henry and William T.—immigrated from Somerset, England to Rockville Centre, Long Island, New York about 1876. There was also a son named James Allen, but it is thought that he was of age and remained in England. They moved on to Paterson, New Jersey, where they lived on Market Street, near the Erie Railroad Station. It is not know at this time if any other children immigrated with the parents or if there were other children left behind in England. In Paterson, son William went into the bottling business; according to Edna (Nichols) Gates, they bottled "Allen's Ale". I think that she must have heard her grandfather, who was a great kidder, telling a "story", because according to later census and his obituary, William bottled mineral water. At a later date, Robert Henry Allen moved on to Paris, Michigan and then to LeRoy, Osceola County, Michigan, where he started and edited a bi-weekly newspaper titled "The LeRoy Independent". William stayed behind in Paterson, but the two families always kept in contact with each other. The Allen family seemed to have been very well educated, as several of William’s daughters were school teachers, and they all seemed to be jolly and have wonderful senses of humor. First Generation JAMES T. ALLEN and FANNY BULT had at least the following children: 2 i. James 1 ALLEN was born in England (probably Somerset). James died AFT 1918, at which time he was living in England.+ 3 ii. William Thomas "Bill" ALLEN was born 30 APR 1851. + 4 iii. ROBERT HENRY ALLEN was born 12 FEB 1855.
Second Generation 3. William Thomas "Bill" 1 ALLEN (JAMES T.) was born in England 30 APR 1851. or b. 1 May? William died 18 FEB 1922 in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, at 70 years of age. His body was interred 21 FEB 1922 in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Section 6, Lot 467, Grave 2. He married Mary Jane TODD, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Todd. Mary was born in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey 31 AUG 1846. According to cemetery records, figuring her date of birth would be 11 Nov 1846. Mary died 19 JUL 1889 in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, at 42 years of uterine cancer. Her body was interred 22 JUL 1889 in Paterson, Passaic, New Jersey, Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Section 6, Lot 467, Graves 3 & 4. William lived in Paterson, New Jersey, and was a bottler and mineral water dealer. In 1920 he was listed as an electrical engineer at the telephone company. He had apparently retired from his bottling business. He and his family lived at 33 Fair St. in Paterson, but at the time of his death he lived at 557 Broadway Street, Paterson, New Jersey. Robert Henry Allen and his brother William came from England to Rockville Center, Long Island, New York. It is not known for sure whether or not they came with their parents. Robert is said to have been four years old at the time. After they were grown, they settled in Paterson, New Jersey, and ran a bottling company. Robert later came to Michigan, and William stayed in New Jersey and ran his bottling company. Robert lived in Paris, Michigan for a short while before setting in LeRoy. He worked in a sawmill for a time before becoming a newspaper editor, and published the "LeRoy Independent", a 5 column quarterly established in Sept. 1884. A couple of years after his first wife died, leaving him with 5 children, he married Ellen STACEY, a widow with 4 children--Addison, Fred, Minnie and Bessie, so between them they had a houseful. After he retired from running the paper, he became a custodian for the LeRoy school in 1914. Robert at one time was the postmaster in LeRoy, and was both township and village clerk. He also gave land for the Baptist Church there. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Rebekah, and local Grange. He died of apoplexy. Robert was a humorous man, had a quick wit and wry sense of humor. He married twice. He married EMMA ANGELINE RIGGS BEF 1879. A record of their marriage could not be found in Osceola County or in Mecosta County nor in State of Michigan. They were either married elsewhere, or the marriage wasn’t recorded. EMMA was born in Miami Co, Ohio 19 AUG 1861. She was the daughter of JOHN RIGGS and SARAH A. BENNET.(See RIGGS Chapter) She died 29 OCT 1895 in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, at 34 years of age of uterine cancer, and her body was interred NOV 1895 in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, LeRoy Twp. Cemetery. I have never found a photo of Emma. Robert then married Ellen E. SCRIBNER in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, 04 FEB 1897. Ellen was born in Vermont JUN 1852, and was the daughter of Reuben SCRIBNER and Esther FISH. She had first married William STACY. She died AFT 1920. Her death was not found in Osceola Co. It is believed she went to live with one of her children, possibly in or near Detroit. 1880 Census-LeRoy Twp, Osceola Co,Michigan, ED 222, Page 9, Line 32, June 8: ALLEN, Robert H. He left Paris for LeRoy in February 1873, and walked the entire distance, part of the trip being through a blazed trail in the dense forests that were here at that time. He ate his first meal in LeRoy with M.W. Westfall, who preceded him to this county. Mr. Allen was twice married, his first wife being Miss Emma Riggs. Some time after the death of his first wife he was united in holy wedlock to Mrs. Ellen Stacy, who survives. He is also survived by two brothers, William of Patterson, N.J. and James of England, and four children; Mrs. Fannie Sprague of Big Rapids, Mrs. Cora Umlor of Conklin, Mich., Mrs. Louise Kipp of Grand Rapids and Robert of San Francisco, Cal. In the list of men who have done their best and given their untiring efforts to the upbuilding of the LeRoy section and Osceola county will be found the name of Robert H. Allen. As publisher of the LeRoy Independent for 17 years he wielded a pen which had a distinct influence in the community. His editorial utterances were of the peculiar "Allen style" and were so spicy that his paper was eagerly looked for from week to week. After pursuing the duties of editor for 17 years he was forced to give up the pen owing to failing eyesight. The deceased's name was always prominent in the political life. Not only did he campaign for many candidates to his day, but he also held a number of offices. As township clerk he served under nine different supervisors and held the office even more years. He was also a prominent lodge man and held offices in the LeRoy Odd Fellows lodge, of which he was a charter member, both the LeRoy and Pomona Granges and the Rebekahs. He will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends, as he was an American of the truest type. He was ever ready to do his part in anything that was for the furtherance of the typical American democracy. Not only will he be missed in the LeRoy section, but there will be a lull in many lodge meetings and political gatherings as the result of his call to the great beyond. He was of an exceedingly kind disposition and ever ready to do a good turn for a friend or neighbor. The funeral will be held from the LeRoy Methodist church this (Thursday) afternoon. Rev. C.W. Holder will officiate. ROBERT HENRY ALLEN and EMMA ANGELINE RIGGS had the following children: 12 i. Henry 2 ALLEN was born in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan 10 JUL 1879. Henry died in infancy.+ 13 ii. He was a printer by trade, and was a Boy Scout leader in San Francisco. He apparently in the armed forces during peace time, but it is not known which branch. He had asthsma, and eventually died from emphysema. He was cremated at Cypress Lawn Cemetery. Barbara Gates remembers Bob and May as being very nice people, and she and baby Ginny lived with them for a time while her husband, Vern, was stationed near there during WWII. 17 vi. Grace seems to be the only child of William to have married and had a child. Her only child, Mary Jane, never married, so it appears that line comes to an end unless some children can be found for James. William and Grace lived in Cleveland in 1916. In 1917, Grace appeared to be living in Hudson Term Station, New York, New York. Is this possibly where her grandparents lived? At the same time, her husband, William, was in Philadelphia. He then was in St. Louis, and then Los Angeles. 24. EDNA MAE 3 NICHOLS (CORA MAE 2 ALLEN, ROBERT HENRY 1 , JAMES T.) was born in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan 05 SEP 1902. Edna was named after her father's school teacher. She always spelled her middle name Mae, but it says May on her birth certificate. "When my mother joined the Catholic Church I had to be baptised in the stepfather's church-St. Andrews Cathedral in Grand Rapids. My stepfather's niece, Julia Schwartz, made me three dresses alike in red and white calico. I was confirmed as Mary Margaret at 5 years old. My stepfather's folks thought I should be called Umlor." Edna worked at the phone company before having children. She worked at an egg candling business on Main Street, and later at a nursing home for a number of years. She was the village seamstress in Coopersville for a long time, always had needlework in her hands--embroidery or crocheting--and she won many, many prizes with her beautiful work at the Berlin Fair. EDNA died 09 MAR 1985 in Grand Haven, Ottawa County, Michigan, at 82 years of age. Her body was interred 12 MAR 1985 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan. She married MILLARD M. GATES Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, 09 MAR 1921. MILLARD was born in Polkton Twp, Ottawa County, Michigan 02 AUG 1894. MILLARD was the son of EDWARD CLINTON GATES and SUSANNA DE CAN. Millard worked for 11 years for the Interurban Railroad (est. 1902) which ran between Grand Rapids and Muskegon as a ticket agent/conductor. The interurban made it possible for people to commute from the small towns to the major cities, and the round trip took 2 hours, 15 minutes. In 1928 the Interurban ceased operations due to loss of patrons to bus lines and improved roads. Millard then went to work for the Coopersville Grain Elevator, also one of the original businesses in the area, and was there for 34 years before retirement. On 24 Aug 1917 the Coopersville Observer reported that Millard M. Gates, Coopersville, failed to pass the physical examination for WWI draft. When questioned about this, Barbara Gates thought it was because he had flat feet. Both Millard and Edna were members of the United Methodist Church in Coopersville. They bought their house on Center Street in Coopersville in 1930. David Gates, his grandson, lived in the same house until the fall of 2000. Millard's hobbies were woodworking and hunting, and he at one time owned an Indian motorcycle. Later in life, Millard and Edna had a travel trailer and used to go camping quite a lot in the summer time. MILLARD died 08 JUL 1967 in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, at 72 years of age. His body was interred 10 JUL 1967 in Coopersville, Ottawa, Michigan, Coopersville. 1920 Census-Grand Rapids, Kent Co, Michigan Vol 51, ED 56, Sheet 4, Line 45 GATES, Millard M. age 25 b. EDNA (NICHOLS) GATES PERSONAL HISTORY 1981 (In her own words) "To begin with, as far back as I have been told by my Grandmother, my Grandfather, Robert Henry Allen and his brother, Uncle Bill Allen, came from England; and I don't know what it was, if they made this soft drink or what, but they called it "Allen's Ale". My Grandfather wandered through New Jersey to LeRoy, Michigan. How he got started in the printing business I don't know--I have never been told--but he had a nice little newspaper of local news and so forth, and he supported his family from it, as it was the only newspaper in the area. He married Emma Jane Riggs and they had three boys and three girls. Fanny was the oldest one, Cora (my mother) and Louise. Then there was Bob, Henry and George. Henry and George one died when he was three and one died in infancy and I don't know the dates of that. Grandma then died when she was only 36 years old. After a few years Grandpa remarried an Ellen Stacey, a widow with two sons and two daughters, so with the five of Grandpa's and four of Grandma's they had quite a house full at one time. Ellen's sons were Addison and Bob, and her daughters were Minnie and Bessie. Mom graduated from LeRoy High School at 10th grade, which was as far as they went. She was 17 years old when she married my father, Walter Nichols. He was 21 at the time of their marriage, and he died at 26. They were married 3 years when I was born, and I was 2 when my father died. Mom was widowed at 22 with me, a 2 year old, on her hands. We stayed in LeRoy until I was 3 to get things settled up, because my father had been a part owner in a lumber mill north of LeRoy with Uncle Dell. They would cut lumber and would wait and take them to the river and let them go down the river. I have a picture of this lumber camp and have no further information of these activities. My father was ill for almost a year and in the hospital, so those things all had to be straightened up. They sold the business and so forth, so after those things were all done, we went to Grand Rapids because there was more work there for a woman in her position with a child. She worked in a milliner's shop, where they used to make hats. Everyone wore hats in those days. We lived with a family who cared for me while Mom worked. I was 3 1/2 when she went to work in Grand Rapids. She worked there for 6 or 8 months. Then she saw an ad in the paper where some people wanted a housekeeper. She answered the ad, which proved to be my stepfather's family. Mother moved out there, and I can so well remember my stepfather coming to Third Street in Grand Rapids, and I can remember that long drive with a horse and buggy, and I just ate it up. I was so fascinated. We got up to this great big, old-fashioned farmhouse, and the mother, Grandma Umlor, was a wheelchair paralytic. Her one whole side was paralyzed, and it even affected her voice, but I could understand her. Her left hand was closed tight, and many was the hour that I spent trying to open that hand. I can remember that I couldn't open it, and she would pat my face, look at me, call me "dear child" and let me open it some more. Isn't that funny how that sticks in my craw, so to speak? Mother stayed there and worked as a housekeeper, and I remember the night Grandma died, because the next morning her bed was empty. They said she had gone to heaven, and she did, believe me. Then there was Grandfather, who was the most wonderful old grandfather you could possibly want. He was a great big, broad-shouldered man with a big white beard, and he was so good to me. There was a creek that ran through a woods that belonged to the Umlor family, and he would take me and tell Mamma not to worry about me. He would hunt up some worms and we would fish. We would get a little string of fish, and it didn't matter how small they were, Grandpa would clean those fish. We would take them into the old fashioned range and fry them for me. He would get me all tired out, don't you know, and he would sit in his old big rocker on the front porch and I took many a nap in that dear old man's arms, and the memories are so pleasant I like to think about them. We would go fishing, we would pick flowers, and I would fall asleep, he would carry me into the bedroom, and maybe I would stay there all afternoon until I woke up. But he would always tell my mother, "Don't you worry about her, we get along fine." And I was with him more than my mother. The little things he told me were so funny. We had a lot of birds for instance. I said, "If I could just catch one of those birds. Grandpa, how do I catch one of those birds?" He very cutely told me, "We'll put some salt on their tail." The next thing he caught me doing was sprinkling salt on the rail of the porch so the salt would get on the birds' tails and I could catch one, but I never did. It was a great big farm home with a lot of pine trees, and an awful lot of hoot owls that would sing and frighten me so, but he would always console me, precious old soul. When I was about 4 1/2 years old Mother married one of these Umlor sons, who was my stepfather, and he died at the age of 79 on Christmas day in 1958. I can remember the day they were married because I was angry at my Aunt Louise because she wouldn't let me go down to the front altar with my mother. I just couldn't understand because wherever Mamma went, I wanted to go. I was just so unhappy because I couldn't go down to that altar, and Aunt Louise had one heck of a time with me. Just before she married him she joined the Catholic church, and I was so perturbed when we were baptized. My godfather, who was my stepfather's brother, held me up to the baptismal font, and the priest poured water on my head and spoiled my curls. Mamma kept my hair in long blond curls. My aunt said I put up a heck of a howl. After they were married we went home to the farm home Marcus had bought a quarter of a mile from the old homestead where Mother had worked, and Floyd, my youngest brother, still owns that and lives there at Wright about 8 miles from Conklin. My oldest brother Wilfred was born just ten months after Mom's second marriage, and the other children came along ten of them in 19 years. We have got a wonderful relationship. They were all born at the same farm home. I will give you their ages. My oldest brother, Wilfred Umlor, is 73; his wife is Helen. Viola Pauline, 72, is married to Erwin Miller. Donald was next. He would be 70 years old, and Rose--they are both deceased. Henry Clayton is also deceased. He was 6 months old when he died. Clayton Henry would be 67; his wife, Marcia, is a widow. Bernard is 66 and married Elizabeth. Harvey, 63, was a bachelor, also deceased. Rita is 60 married to Glenn Schoenborn. Herman (married Anne) is 58; and Floyd was 55, single, and lives in the old homestead. Yes, there was lots of work in caring for the children, a happy family, as Mom used to say, especially as they were tucked in to bed asleep. Mom's evenings were always spent mending and sewing, getting ready for another busy day. The last I helped with though was Bernard, and I was through school (8th grade) and had started away working for a family. When I was married three months, Rita was born. When she was 2 years old, Herman was born, as was my own son 13 days apart. Vernon was born April 15, 1923 and Herman April 28, 1923, both 10 pound babies at birth. 22 months later Eileen was born, and yes, 1 1/2 years later another brother, Floyd, was born. Floyd was born June 16, 1926. Mother and I raised our children, my two and her three last ones together--five children under five years old. As to the sleeping arrangements so many years ago, no mattresses or feather beds. We had bed ticking made--heavy blue and white--the size of the beds. They had an opening in the center of the top. These were filled with nice, clean straw each fall at thrashing time. I knew the thrashing machines would be coming. The ticking would be emptied into the chicken coop and Mom washed them. Then we would go up in the barn after the thrashing machines had left and pack straw in as tightly as we could so these ticks would be rounded right up. We carried them to the house, put them on the beds and made up the beds. It was a full day's job. Those first few nights, Mother said she would listen for someone to fall out of bed until the straw got packed down. Mom said she would hear a big plop! Someone rolled out. If no one cried, she said she would try to go back to sleep as she knew they weren't hurt. Soon another plop! Somebody else had rolled out of bed. Occasionally some sound sleeper wouldn't even make it up and get back onto the bed unless it was cool. They would finish their night on the floor with their pillow. Yes, I can remember hitting that floor too, and waking up to help one of the younger ones back into bed. By the end of the week or so the straw ticks were flatly packed down so that at least we would stay in the bed. There was just one big room upstairs before the house was remodeled. It was hot in the summer, cold in the winters. We slept in warm blankets and had homemade wool filled quilts on the beds. Yes, my Stepdad raised sheep, and each spring when the sheep were sheared, the wool was taken to a place where it was cleaned and shaped into bats to fill quilts. Many is the quilt I helped tie. Mother usually pieced the tops the same as I have pieced quilts too. You grandchildren all have one of those. I started to school at age 7--on my birthday, in fact. I went to St. Joseph's Catholic school 1/4 mile from the old farm home. Our show and tell school paper just recently delivered to everyone here in Coopersville had a picture of that school. I took the 8th grade exam and graduated from school at the age of 14. There were only 10 in the class, and I am proud to say I had the highest mark of 5 girls, and Joseph Cloeting was the highest of the boys. There is one other of my girl classmates and myself and one boy who are still living of that 10. Yes, I had 100 in spelling and 98, but no more, in penmanship, and 94 in geography. I was real proud, as I had to miss school an awful lot to help at home, care for the little kids with the family we had, as Mother had more than she could handle. I graduated June 8 with kids from various schools, and we had our exercises at Ramona Theater at Reeds Lake east of Grand Rapids. There were over 1000 graduates from various schools. One real hurt was out the 5 girls, I was the only one that couldn't have white shoes. The folks didn't have the money, and where could you go to get them. I was told in those days that white shoes were foolishness. Crying did no good. It has been 65 years this last June since then. Within a month a neighbor and family of 9 needed a hired girl, and I was chosen. I was sent to this job. I was used good, but I worked from 5 in the morning until 8 or 9 at night. I got the kids, all 5, to bed, and by then I was more than ready to go to bed. They were a stubborn bunch of brats. I was there for nearly a year. I did laundry for 2 days, weather permitting, out in the back yard on a scrub board and a hand wringer. There was no skin on my knuckles, believe me! The bachelor brother of the family would tend to see that the fire was built under a great big iron black tub so that I would have plenty of hot water. I pumped cold water for the rinsing and all that. There were two tubs. By the way, I got $4 a week. Next spring my aunt in Grand Rapids found me a job as a nursemaid for a darling little girl 3 years old, and I was used like a human being. I worked there for about a year and a half, and they moved away. Another job was for a family of four children, nice people, so kind and every one of the kids had their jobs to do, and I liked them and was used as one of the family. I did housework and so forth. There was one pleasant event in regards to this family, whose name was Irish. They were a pleasant family and I worked awful hard. They had some trees called a sugar bush. They would tap the maple trees out in the woods behind the house 1/4 mile, and all the neighbors would help tap those, hang on the sap buckets, get them filled and haul them to a shed where they kept them boiling all the time in great big square iron vats. They worked depending on the weather. If it was warm during the day and cold at night the sap would run good. All the neighbors would help work feverishly to help this Mr. Irish. They were a poor, but kind family. They gathered sap with a team and sleigh or wagon and took it to this shanty out in the woods for boiling, bottling or canning. We kept it up with the neighbors day and night. After the work was finished, Mr. Irish always gave a party for the workers. He had a huge great big kitchen and a huge table, and they would bring up this big vat and put it on the old cookstove. They always baked fresh bread and invited the neighbors in. Old Grandma always insisted that we drink plenty of milk with that and it would keep it from making us sick to our stomach from the richness. We had this cooking on the stove all the time with this fresh bread, and some on ice. We would get clean snow from the back yard, and pour over it and it would make a taffy. Grandma Irish would say, "Be sure to drink your milk", so we did that. We always had pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast. Later I worked for a confectionery store and a grocery store on Lyon Street in Grand Rapids. At 16 I went to Flint to spend the summer with Uncle Dell and Aunt Alice. I came by train to Grand Rapids. The Interurban to Marne didn't stop and went to Coopersville. That is where I met the ticket agent who proved to be your Grandfather, Millard Gates. He was train master and ticket agent. We wrote and saw each other all that was possible, no car or nothing, until he got an old Ford, and we were married two years later. We lived in Grand Rapids that first year, and Grandpa was still here at the depot. Grandpa and I were married it would have been 60 years the 9th of last March. We were married in St. Andrew's parish house in Grand Rapids in 1921. We moved here on our first anniversary. Grandpa worked nights at the Interurban depot, and I worked at the telephone office for a few months, but for some reason or other I was so deathly sick when that first baby was coming I had to quit my job. My first baby [Vernon] was born 2 years 1 1/2 months after marriage April 15, 1923, and Eileen was born 22 1/2 months later, 26th of January 1925. We bought this house in 1930, 51 years this coming September 22, 1981. I was also the village seamstress here in Coopersville for 39 1/2 years. I started right after we moved into this house. I always made all of our own children's clothes, coats, shirts, suits, even caps and mittens. I made a coat for a little girl 4 years old of an old coat I had ripped apart, washed and turned the material and made a coat. One person told two, two told four, and that first winter I made 11 coats. The Interurban went bankrupt due to the fact that there were so many private cars then and it just wasn't needed. Grandpa went across the street after working for the Interurban for 11 years and worked for the Coopersville Elevator for 34 years and 4 months before he retired. Both of the kids graduated from Coopersville High School. In Vernon's grade there were two Salutatorians, who both had the same amount of school, they started the same day and graduated the same day with the same standings, Vernon and Glenn Bruggers. Vernon went into the service the 26th of January 1943 and came back 3 years later in 1946. He was married to Barbara in 1942. Eileen and Vern were married here at the house August 5, 1943. Vern left for overseas November 27, 1943, and had 37 months of service in India and that part of the world. Eileen went back to Hyattsville, Maryland after they were married, when Vern had just 5 days furlough. He came home on the bus, they were married here, and they went back that night and the next day he had to go back to camp. It was a rush trip. Those were bad times. Vernon left and we didn't know where he was from the 30th of January, and Vern left 5 days later. Thank God they both came back after those three years. Vern [Alberts] has gone completely around the world--left from Maryland and returned to the West Coast to a camp in Washington State. I will be 79 September 5, 1981 and have been a widow for 14 years after a marriage of 46 years and 4 months to your Grandpa, who was 8 years older than me. P.S. As I reread this up to this point it sounds as though my young life was a "bed of roses"! I'll admit there were a lot of thorns along the way, but why dwell on unpleasant things? I receive many blessings and love now from my children and grandchildren and nine great grandchildren to date--a blessing indeed! I am so well looked after by my family, some very thoughtful neighbors and friends. I think, dear family, I have covered some of the highlights of my life as you have requested. To be sure I am not a writer, so I have tried to put things on paper as I would tell it to you--some things you would never know otherwise. I just hope I haven't made too many mistakes in the writing. My life now is made so very happy by all the love and consideration shown me by all my family--and indeed there are many! I have been alone now for nearly 15 years since Grandpa was taken, but as several of my family members say, I am never alone. "You are as close as my telephone." So I am really content and blessed with a wonderful family, each and every one! God bless you! So much love, Mom, Grandma & Great Grandma"
