RIGGS Family
in Osceola County, MI As far back as I have found on the Riggs family, they were in Maysville, Bourbon County, Kentucky, where John was born. Not much has is known about his father. His name was Job, and according to "Portrait and Biographical Portrait of Osceola County" by Chapman, John's father is reported to have been from New England, and was a mechanic. Job married Rachel Plummer in Adams County, Ohio in May 1833. They lived for a time in Maysville, Kentucky. The family moved to Ohio after John was born, and his father died a few years thereafter. More research needs to be done on this family in both Ohio and Kentucky. More is known about John's mother, Rachel Plummer. She was born 8 JUN 1809 in what was then Lewis County, Kentucky. Rachel had a sister, Anna Plummer, who was John’s wife, Sarah’s, mother, making John and his wife, Sarah A. Bennet(t), first cousins. Rachel and Anna’s parents were Thomas Plummer and his first wife, Jean Ruggles. Thomas Plummer was one of the earliest settlers in Lewis (later Mason) County, Kentucky. The Ruggles were also early settlers in the area. Many of the descendants of the Plummer family migrated to the Miami Valley region of Ohio (Miami, Mercer, Shelby, Auglaize Counties). Thomas helped to build the Methodist Episcopal Church in Laramie Twp, Shelby County, Ohio in 1838. Ancestry charts for both John and Sarah will follow at the end of this Riggs family genealogy. 1. JOB 1 RIGGS was born in Waterford, Kentucky. He died in Ohio, date unknown. He married RACHEL PLUMMER in MAY 1833 in Adams County, Ohio. RACHEL was born in Lewis (now Mason) Co, Kentucky 10 APR 1803. She died age 82y, 5m, 29d RACHEL was the daughter of THOMAS PLUMMER and JEAN RUGGLES.RACHEL died 9 OCT 1892 in LeRoy, Osceola Co., Michigan, at 89 years of age. Her body was interred OCT 1892 LeRoy Twp, Osceola, Michigan, LeRoy Township Cemetery. Rachel was born in Kentucky when it was a frontier, and was from genuine "Blue Grass" ancestry. Job died at an early age, leaving her with three children. She apparently lived with her step-mother, Elizabeth Boggess Plummer, in Iowa after Thomas Plummer's (her father) death about 1860, and the 1880 census shows her living with her son, John Riggs, in Osceola County, Michigan. John's father was a mechanic in Kentucky, and about 1840 moved his family to Pickaway Co, Ohio or Shelby Co, and later to Mercer Co., Ohio. John’s sister, Elizabeth, is rumored to have been born on the Ohio river between Kentucky and Ohio. The 1787 Bourbon Co. KY Tax list for 1787 shows a John Riggs, Sr. and the pages from the History of Maysville and Mason County also mentions a John Riggs as signing a petition in 1786 from Limestone Settlement for a new county. 2. JOHN 2 RIGGS (JOB1) was born in Maysville, Bourbon Co, Kentucky 14 FEB 1834. He died 12 DEC 1911 Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan, at 77 years of age. His body was interred DEC 1911 in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, LeRoy Twp. Cemetery.John married SARAH A. BENNET in Auglaize Co, Ohio, 22 NOV 1854. SARAH was born in Shelby Co, Ohio 10 JAN 1831. She was the daughter of PETER BENNET and ANNA PLUMMER. Her body was interred MAY 1893 in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, LeRoy Twp. Cemetery. She was born in Shelby County, Ohio, and was the daughter of well-to-do Irish farmers. The inscription on Sarah's tombstone in the LeRoy Cemetery reads:

Susanna was born in Ohio NOV 1835. They later separated. John was the oldest of three children. He had a sister, Elizabeth Jane, but nothing is known of his other sibling. He was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, February 14, 1834, where his father was a mechanic. It has been said John was six years old when his parents moved to Ohio. It is my feeling that they went to be near John's mother, Rachel Plummer Riggs' family, who had moved there previously. In Ohio, the family lived in Pickway Co., and later in Mercer Co. His father died there, and John took responsibility for his two younger siblings and for taking care of his mother. He was a farmer and shoemaker. At the age of 20 he married his cousin, Sarah Bennet. He was always very much in love with Sarah. John was a private in the Civil War, Company C 57th Regiment, 5th Ohio Infantry. He volunteered 29 FEB 1864, stating his occupation at time of enlistment as shoemaker. He was 6'1" with grey hair and grey eyes. Date of first muster was 1 MAR 1864 under General Sherman. The Regiment was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland and Georgia. He would have been present on a scouting expedition to Caperton’s Ferry from March 31-April 2. On 1 May 1864 he was reported absent sick with rheumatism in his back and side, and was left at Larkinsville, Alabama by order of the Regiment surgeon. He returned to the regiment when they were near Resaca, Alabama, which would have been May 14-15. The company then had battles at Cassville May 19 and New Hope Church May 25. The unit then had operations on the line of Pumpkin Vine Creek and battles about Dallas, New Hope Church and Allatoona Hills from May 26-June 5. On the 9th of June at Port Republic the regiment had a disastrous loss of 244 men killed, wounded and prisoners. There were operations about Marietta and against Kenesaw Mountain June 10-July 2, then they were sent to Pine Hill 11-14, Lost Mountain 15-17, Gilgal or Golgotha Church the 15th, Muddy Creek 17th, Noyes Creek 19th, and Kolb’s Farm June 22. On 27 June 1864, John was severely wounded in the left thigh by a musket ball at a battle near Kenesaw Mountain, Georgia. According to an article written by Myrtle Holmes, his granddaughter, he had told her he was gathering information behind enemy lines, and was rolled in a cow hide lying on the ground. The rebels, thinking he was a cow, shot him for food. He was taken to Altonia General Hospital in Georgia, and on 15 July 1864 was transported from Nashville to Louisville, Ky. On 16 July 1864 he was transported from Louisville to Cincinnati, and on 17 July 1864 to Wappokonetta, Ohio. Dec 1864 through 31 May 1865 show him in hospital in Ohio. All of these transportation costs, a total of $3.80, were deducted from his pay. He was also responsible for purchasing his own uniform, which took most of one month’s pay of $13. Conditions were harsh, and there were heavy war casualties from this regiment. He was discharged at Camp Denison, Ohio 31 May 1865. John lived in Coldwater, Jefferson Twp, Mercer Co, Ohio from 1865-1869. In 1869 he moved to Paris, Michigan, which at that time was a wilderness, then in LeRoy, Osceola Co, Michigan, where he had 80 acres from 1870 to Nov 24, 1908. A copy of the deed to this property as well as a photo as it looks today is shown. The John Riggs farm in Osceola County was on the North corner of 61 and Old 131. The barn is in the front and the house in rear. It is across the road from Austemark's Store (later K & R Restaurant). The John Riggs farm was later owned by Floyd Dixon and Frank Tate. As well as being a farmer and shoemaker, John was staunch Republican, and his family were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. After his first wife, Sarah, died, he married Susanna by a Justice of the Peace. Both events happened between 1880 and 1898. It has been said that John and his second wife didn't get along with each other and were separated after less than two years of marriage. In the
Special Census, John is shown living in Nirvana, Penora Twp, Lake Co, Michigan. On Nov 24, 1908 he went to live at the
Veteran's Facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He died of heart
disease in Grand Rapids, Michigan and is buried in LeRoy. John suffered with "spells" of gout that he got in his backand side for most of his life. This apparently had begun while he was in the military. He was the son of Samuel COON and Sarah. He had first married Minerva BONE in Mercer Co, Ohio, 26 MAY 1855. She died 22 March 1861 and was buried in Twp. Cemetery in Coldwater, Mercer County, Ohio along with a son, David, Jr., who had died at less than one year. Elizabeth Riggs Coon married Albert Perry BAILEY in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, 21 JUL 1872. Albert was born in West Virginia 2 MAY 1833. Albert had first married Rosanah HUSLINGER. He died 2 AUG 1911 in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, at 78 years of age. His body was interred AUG 1911 LeRoy Twp, Osceola, Michigan, LeRoy Twp. Cemetery. Albert was in the Civil War as a Pvt. in Company C, 57th Ohio Infantry, and was shot in the leg. He received a pension. Rachel Plummer Riggs lived with them as she became elderly. Albert's death certificate states he was born in New York. Other records state West Virginia or Virginia.Albert was not found in the 1850 Ohio Census. Elizabeth's first husband was David Coon. David had been married previously to Minerva Bone, and had one known child living, named John Coon. David Coon was in the Civil War in Company C, 57th Ohio Infantry, which, as you recall, was the same unit as John Riggs and Albert Bailey. On his enrollment, he was listed as having blue eyes, brown hair, sandy complexion, and was 5’ 8" tall. David was captured July 22, 1864 at Decatur, Georgia during the seige of Atlanta. He was taken to Andersonville Prison and died there a little over a month later from scurvy. Conditions at the camp were very harsh. The camp consisted of a 26½ acre wooden stockade made of 15’ pine poles inside of which the prisoners were held with no shelter. A stream running through the stockade served as a water source for drinking and bathing as well as latrine, and there was inadequate food and clothing, and lack of medical attention. At the time David was imprisoned there, there were over 32,000 men confined to the camp. David is buried in the Andersonville, Georgia cemetery. Elizabeth's mother, Rachel, was then living with her and her step-son, John, according to the 1870 census in Butler Twp, Mercer County, Ohio. Elizabeth moved to the LeRoy area, and some time after 1869, she married Albert Perry Bailey, a widower with six children. His first wife was Roseanne Huslinger. Elizabeth had two children with Albert, Esther and Byron. They also adopted a daughter, Alice L. Bevins, who was Elizabeth's niece, Permelia's daughter.

5. Permelia Florence 3 RIGGS (JOHN 2 , JOB 1 ) was born in Coldwater, Mercer, Ohio 8 NOV 1858. Permelia died 11 MAY 1892 in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, at 33 years of age. Her body was interred MAY 1892 in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, LeRoy Twp. Cemetery.She married Eugene Shepard BEVINS in LeRoy, Osceola, Michigan, 8 APR 1877. Eugene was born in Riga, Monroe, New York 15 APR 1855. He died 13 APR 1944 in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw, Michigan, at 88 years of age. Eugene was born in New York, and at the age of 11, his family moved to Cascade, Kent Co, Michigan. He graduated from high school there. In 1872 he moved with his family to LeRoy, Michigan, where he helped build the house and barn, clear the fields, plant, etc. He also worked in the lumber camps as a lumberjack. He was apparently tall and good looking with red hair. He was intelligent, and could talk and tell stories about almost anything. Eugene and Permelia were charter members of the Rebecca Victoria Lodge, and Eugene was a member and scribe of the Encampment of LeRoy and Rose Lake for veterans of the Spanish American War. Permelia was said to have been a pretty lady, and was very generous and likeable. She died from childbirth after Florence was born. After Permelia died, Eugene tried for a few years to keep the four children at home with his mother helping him, but it got to be too much for him, and he let families adopt the children. He went to work as a foreman on the GR&I railroad that went through LeRoy. After retiring from the railroad, he was a strawberry and raspberry farmer near Fremont, Michigan, but gave that up after a few years and moved back to LeRoy. In the 1910 census he was listed as assistant postmaster. He had always kept in touch with his daughter, Alice, and son, Harry Jarvis. Later in life he worked for Ora Holmes, and was a very good hand with an axe and saw. Eugene had a stroke in the coal room at his home and walked the 1/2 mile to the Holmes farm to get help. After that he went to live with his daughter, Alice, near Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he passed away and was buried.

She married twice. She first married Ernest SNYDER and had two children. Ernest was born in Quebec, Canada 1860. He died 1929 in Eaton Rapids, Eaton, Michigan, at 69 years of age. His body was interred 1929 in Eaton Rapids, Eaton, Michigan, Hamlin Township Cemetery. Ida divorced her first husband and married a man named VanMarter, apparently leaving Michigan. Neither of the children went with her. Inez went to live with her grandfather, John Riggs, and Zella went with her father, who remarried and moved back to Canada for several years. They later returned to Michigan. The family was apparently not happy with Ida's second marriage, and there seemed to have been some question about her death. It has been believed by the family that Ida was choked to death, and her husband was suspect, but no one was ever able to prove it. LOCKHART, Jr. in Reed City, Osceola, Michigan, 18 MAR 1885. John was born in Auglaize Co, Ohio 26 MAR 1862. John died 27 APR 1926 in Osceola Co, Michigan, at 64 years of age. His body was interred APR 1926 LeRoy Twp, Osceola, Michigan, LeRoy Twp. Cemetery. John was a farmer. His father, John Lockhart, was one of the earliest homesteaders and settlers in LeRoy, coming from Ohio in 1869 and settling on eight acres. The Lockhart and Riggs families had neighboring farms in Osceola County. When John and Martha married, John built a log house just north of Randolph School. The family later moved to Burdell Twp, north of Tustin, where John worked in lumbering. Here they also took in boarders. After John’s wife, Martha died from pneumonia, he went to work in a lumber camp with his children. Life there was difficult, and the family was poor, but the children seemed to have fond memories of playing there at the camp. The camp workers seemed to have pulled together to form a family of sorts. The older girls took turns doing housework for neighbors, and Melvin worked piling wood for Mr. Carlson, the owner of the camp. John remained depressed, and the children proved too much for him to handle, and he began to place them with relatives.

His body was interred JAN 1988 in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon, Riverside Cemetery. He married Grace FENNEL. Grace was born 25 NOV 1893. Grace died APR 1978 at 84 years of age. George lived in Oregon and came to visit Myrtle each year. He and his wife had no children of their own, but Grace had two children from a previous marriage. She married Joseph WILHELM. Her second name on Family Group Sheet looks like DeCocta. Is this a first husband’s surname or a middle name? Esther BAILEY and Joseph WILHELM had the following children: 35 i. Mable WILHELM. Mable had 3 children. 36 ii. Albert WILHELM was born 22 FEB 1894. Albert died AUG 1981 at 87 years of age. They moved to South Carolina in 1983. After Betty had been married to Murray for six months, her father passed away, and her mother came to live with them. Her name could have been Betsy.
"Florence's mother died in childbirth with her. She lived with her father and grandfather until the age of 3, then was adopted by Aaron and Sarah "Sadie" Bowman, and her name was changed to Florence Evelyn Bowman. She was a happy little girl with red curls. She went to school in Ashton, Michigan where her family lived, then attended the Chicago Evangelistic Institute, from which she graduated in 1913. Her adoptive parents were disappointed in this, as they were Dunkards. She was called at the age of 21 to a Nazarene Church at Minot, North Dakota. She had a breakdown and went to live with some old friends of the family. After she was well, she went to a church in Flaxville, Montana. There she met William, and they married on the way back from a camp meeting in Sawyer, ND. In April following, Florence had an appendix operation, and the doctor discovered she was pregnant with Paul. The family moved back to Ashton, Michigan in 1919 when Florence received word that her mother was dying. Her father died three weeks later. They then traveled around to different places in Iowa, and Florence held tent revivals while Bill found work where he could, and they finally settled in Wyoming, Iowa. where Florence was the pastor for many years in the Methodist Church, and their sons started Big Bill's Feed Store." Tom came to Michigan and settled in Tustin in 1900, where he worked in the lumber camps. In the 1910 census he was listed as a farmer, and in 1920 a laborer in a planing mill. In 1921 he and his family moved to Eaton Rapids, where George worked in the local woolen mills for ten years, then joined the city police force, where he worked the rest of his life. He was a member of the IOOF lodge, where he was Past Noble Grand. He died in the line of duty as a police officer.

"Tom" Emery Dies While Attempting to Stop Street Fight Last Saturday Night. Funeral Tuesday. Allen McMann, 27, Melvin DeWaters, 23, and Walter Ashley, 27, all of Eaton Rapids; also James Russell, 26, of Onondaga, were under arrest and all except James Russell who was free on a$2000 bond, were held in the county jail Monday for investigation following the death of George C. "Tom" Emery, 65, Eaton Rapids night watchman, Saturday night, May 31. McMann, DeWaters and Russell were held for resisting an officer, and Ashley received 90 days on a drunk and disorderly charge, according to a report by Justice L.F. Baldwin. McMann waived examination and was bound over to circuit court. DeWaters demanded an examination which was set for Tuesday, June 10. Both are being held in the county jail as they failed to post $2000 bonds. Mr. Emery had placed McMann under arrest and, assisted by several citizens, had him handcuffed and was taking him to the city jail, assisted by Itha Miller. Mr. Emery dropped dead in the middle of W. Knight Street about 20 feet from the west alley, where the fight took place. Death was believed to have been caused by a heart attack. "Tom" had lived in Eaton Rapids since 1921, and had been employed by the city for 10 years. He was a Past Noble Grand of the local lodge of Odd Fellows. Survivors include the widow, Inez; two daughters, Mrs. Violet Campbell of Mishawaka, Ind., and Mrs. Mildred Reed of Eaton Rapids; and a son, Carl, also fo Eaton Rapids; two brothers Earl of Lake City, MI and Sam of Dunkirk, IN. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church here at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, under the direction of the Dey Funeral home. Rev. Vernon Legg officiated, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Members of the Odd Fellow Lodge conducted services at the grave." Inez had problems with her legs. She traveled a lot. At one time she took care of John Riggs before he went to the Soldier's Home in Grand Rapids. She and Tom lived in Tustin, Michigan. She married Lewis BEILFUSE in Egetts, 22 FEB 1910. Lewis was born about 1882. Laura and Louis lived with Louis' parents in Egetts, Michigan, which was an old lumbering town in Lake County. It is gone now. They later rented farms around LeRoy and Reed City. Louis was a farmer, but died while working in a furniture factory in Big Rapids. Laura was a seamstress and did sewing for stores and people in Big Rapids.

He was the son of Daniel HOLMES and Sarah "Sadie" Amelia WERTZ. Orin died 29 NOV 1959 at 67 years of age. Myrtle’s mother had died when she was quite small. She lived at the Carlson Lumber Camp near LeRoy, where her father worked. There was no school in the camp, so she didn’t attend school at that time. When she was 9 years old, she went to live with Jenny (Lockhart)and Al Steig. He taught Myrtle how to read and write and her multiplication tables. She walked three miles one way to the Randolph rural school; and had housekeeping, and barn and field chores to do. She attended LeRoy High School, and didn’t graduate, but took the state teaching exam, becoming a schoolteacher. She then attended Central Michigan Teachers College and continued to teach. She began teaching in a two room school at the age of 18 at the going pay of $25 per month. She later worked her way up to teaching high school in LeRoy. She and her husband raised their two daughters on a farm. Myrtle also worked for the Gleaners, was a member of the Michigan State Women’s Clubs, and was involved in other social activities. In later life she lived along the Hersey River in Reed City with her daughter, Bea Lynch. She was a wonderful storyteller, and wrote many interesting historical articles for the local newspaper. She was just short of her 102nd birthday when she died. Osceola Herald, March 11, 1987 BACK IN TIME by Myrtle Holmes: Previous to my mother’s death, I lived with my family at a lumber camp northwest of Tustin, where my father worked. I was the sixth in a family of eight. All were at home except my oldest brother, who had already found work in another lumber camp. Mother had pneumonia, and in those days it was nearly always fatal, since about the only treatment for it was aconite and beldonna. Since neither of these had the desired effect, the doctor tried colomel in large doses. I have since learned that the treatment alone could have been fatal. Within a short time after her death, we moved to the Carlson camp southwest of what was Dewing’s Siding near LeRoy. Our house of four large rooms was provided by Mr. Carlson. My two older sisters took charge of the house and four of us who were younger. (My youngest brother had gone to live with an aunt when Mother became ill. I was 6 at the time of her death.) The mother was a good woman and a very hard worker. She took in washing for men at the camp, which she did the hard way. She could bake the best bread and raised biscuits that I have ever eaten. Since she made so many, she very generously treated we three kids to a biscuit each. As you may guess, we made our way to her house when the delicious aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air nearby. Father scolded us for as he called "begging food." But you know, somehow the aroma of fresh bread has a strong attraction. For children that is even stronger than father’s harsh words. So the smell of fresh bread still attracted despite father’s words. My brother, who seemed to be the chore boy for my older sisters, will be referred to as "Pug" which was his nickname. "The girls" are my sisters, who were working hard trying to take the place of Mother. The girls resented the attraction that the aroma of baking bread had for us, and "Pug" said we were beggers, just like the tramps who were constantly around the camp asking for food. The many people around the camp, too, gave us much interest. There were people who were different from any that I had ever seen, such as the Indians.I saw the young Indian men working with logs on the millpond. The logs were rolled from large rollways into the pond, and from there driven by the Indians to the mill to be made into lumber. One of the men would get on a log and with a pike pole and ride the log to the mill entrance where other men would place it in a position to be sawed into boards. The men were very agile. Sometimes they would "burl" the logs, jump from one to another and put on a real show. The Indian women made baskets of all kinds, colors and shapes. These they carried on their backs and brought them into camp to sell. They usually came to our house in the evening because if Father was there, he always bought some. He never failed to patronize them, with the result that they came often and Father had more baskets than we could use. He gave them to many relatives and friends. At first I was startled at their appearance, but soon learned they were good people who worked hard. The men weren’t very dependable as workers, as they soon grew tired and took time off. However, the women who came to our home were people to be highly respected. As I have thought of those days long gone I have had many memories, and I have concluded that when I count my pleasant memories I cease to count my years. BACK IN TIME May 20, 1987 by Myrtle Holmes (cont.): Our wonderful spring at the camp was suddenly shattered when a wagon drove up to our house and the wagon had a box on it and two men sat in the driver’s seat. One man came to the door and told my sister that our father had been hurt. George and I stood near the wagon and watched them remove Father and Melvin from a bed that they had made on the floor of the box. The bed was straw covered by blankets. So one- by-one they were carried in and placed in bed. The girls could only say how happy they were that spring house cleaning was done prior to this tragedy. The men said that a doctor would be there soon. They both stayed until the doctor came and had given his verdict. Many years later Father lived with us in west LeRoy so he gave me details of how it all came about, so the events that I did not remember were filled in by him. Soon the doctor came driving a buggy drawn by a brown horse. He rushed immediately to the bedroom, coming out soon, saying little and asked for hot water. This being supplied he returned and did not come out for some time. He said that aside from bruises and a few cuts that all other injuries were internal. Father was not as serious as Melvin. He was sure that Father would be much improved in a few weeks, but that he did not expect Melvin to live. Many tears were shed and prayers said. Since we had so recently lost our Mother by death, another death seemed almost unbearable. We anxiously looked forward to Father’s recovery, but to look forward to losing Melvin was so depressing. He was our friend, a playmate, our chore boy and most of all "our brother". The doctor came every day to check their progress and was deeply concerned with his patients. Father was our bread winner and of course we had very little if any capital ahead. Father did not have health insurance. The only insurance he had was that Mr. Carlson promised him work when he was able to return to work. He did receive the pay that he had coming. In spite of the terrible uncertainty, many beautiful things happened to us. Relatives and neighbors all came to offer help. They brought food and many offered to stay and care for the patients overnight. Grandfather and Grandmother Lockhart brought eggs and butter. Even home-cured meat was most generously shared. My father told me of the big box of staple groceries that Mr. Swem had sent out from his store in Ashton. These kindly acts of sympathy and love for mankind was never forgotten by the family. Shortly after the accident a first cousin, Cora Nichols, and her husband Walter, came to see us at the camp and of course bring us some of their garden products. They were a newly married couple who lived on what later has been known as the Albin Johnson farm. They asked if they might take me home with them in order to relieve my sisters of some of the responsibility. George then went to spend a week at a friends home at the camp. While visiting with the Nichols they were very kind to me and one of the things that we did was to make a trip to LeRoy. This I think was the first time that I had been there. Of course we went by horses and wagon. The road was very primitive, but the location of the road was as it is now. The hill, just east of Mell Marcus’ farm was covered by heavy wood planks. I think it was too sandy for horses to pull heavy loads on. Anyway the rest of the roads, were sand or clay with many deep ruts. After buying their groceries they tookk me to Walden’s Shoe Store. This store was next to the John Glerum hardware store and is now an annex of the Glerum store. In a future article I will tell you more of the stores and their owners in LeRoy. I had never seen so many shoe boxes in my life. To my surprise Cora asked that I be fitted with a pair of shoes. The pair that she selected were I thought, simply beautiful. They were black button shoes with patent leather toes. A button hook also came with them. Cora insisted that I wear them and put the old ones in a box to take home to wear for every day. I wore them with pride always being careful that the patent toes were always polished. Then came time to go back to the camp. When we arrived there we found Father sitting in a rocker and the doctor said that Melvin had improved to the extent that he would live. Now I will tell you how Father said that it all happened. He was coming home after delivering a load of lumber to the railroad siding. Then he, Melvin and an Indian had only the bolsters and reach to sit on. He on the front bolster, driving, Melvin on the back with his feet on the reach, whildan Indian that he had given a ride was some place in between. The horses became frightened when a flock of Blue Heron rose from a pond making a terrific noise. Of course they all fell off and the wheels passed over them. I do not know what became of the Indian, however, I presume now that he was taken to one of their shanty’s and their medicine man took care of him in the Indian way. Melvin’s recovery was quite lengthy and out of our love and respect for him, we no longer called him "Pug" but Melvin. Too during his days of recovery he let us know that he had special favors coming. The neighbors and friends were all a bit closer because of all of this sickness. We knew how valuable good friends can be. But that was the way of life then. Even the lumber jacks paid us a lot more attention. So once again when we count blessings we soon forget our tears.
