SALTON Family This chapter about the Salton family will begin with Christopher Salton, who was born in Pickering, N. Riding, Yorkshire, England, and was our Salton immigrant to the United States some time before 1840. It is pretty certain that his father was William Salton b. 9 Feb 1771 in Pickering, son of William and Elizabeth (Shafflells) Salton. His mother was Elizabeth Foss, christened 13 May 1787 in nearby Kirkby Fleetham, Yorkshire, daughter of George and Jane (Thompson) Foss. George Foss was a schoolteacher in Kirkby Fleetham. The Saltons lived in the village Pickering, Yorkshire, England for at least 2-3 generations, but the Salton name was first found in Yorkshire in medieval records. The 1823 Baine’s Directory for Pickering shows a William Salton in Eastgate listed as grocer and also a William Salton listed as a stone mason. Our immigrant, Christopher, was a stone mason/bricklayer. PICKERING-"This town belongs to the Duchy of Lancaster, having jurisdiction over several neighbouring villages, called the honour of Pickering. It is a place of great antiquity, and formerly sent two members to parliament, but it no longer retains that privilege. The town is long and straggling, but it is pleasantly situated on an eminence, at the bottom of which runs a brook, called Pickering Beck. Here is a weekly market on Monday. The church is an ancient and spacious building, with a lofty spire, dedicated to St. Peter, and the living is a vicarage, in the patronage of the Dean of York. Near the western extremity of the town stands the castle, which is now in a very ruinous state; and part of the ground within the walls is converted into gardens. The brow of the hill commands a delightful view over the vale of Pickering, celebrated for its fertility."-From Baine's "Directory of the County of York", 1823.
First Generation
1. CHRISTOPHER FOSS 1 SALTON, son of WILLIAM SALTON andELIZABETH FOSS, was born in Pickering, Yorkshire, England 29 JUL 1808, son of William and Elizabeth (FOSS) SALTON. He died 18 JAN 1883 Ottawa Co, Michigan, at 74 years of age. His body was interred JAN 1883 in Lamont, Ottawa, Michigan, Maplewood Cemetery in Lot 54. He married CYNTHA LOUISA CILLEY probably in St. Lawrence Co, New York, about 1840. CYNTHA was born in Ontario, Canada FEB 1820. She was the daughter of WILLIAM CILLEY and CHARLOTTE GOLDEN (See CILLEY Chapter). CYNTHA died 13 SEP 1902 in Tallmadge Twp, Ottawa, Michigan, at 82 years of age. Ottawa County tax records show her paying taxes through 1894-then her son, Harvey, takes over the taxes for the property in 1895. Cynthia's father was born in NH and her mother in NY. She had 9 children, 7 living in 1900. 1900 Census-Tallmadge Twp, Ottawa Co, MI ED 141, Sht 4, Line 66: SALTON, Cynthia L. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church on Monday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Rev. M.J. Duffy. She was an old resident. Christopher was a bricklayer (mason). He came to the U.S. prior to 1840, and took up residence in Lisbon and Russell, NY. He apparently fought in the Civil War, although a service record for him has not been found. He came to Ottawa County, Michigan in the 1860s, when it was still very much a frontier. He cleared and settled on a property between Berlin (now Marne) and Lamont on what is now Johnson Street. He was a stone mason/bricklayer and also farmed his land. The Salton family had a close relationship with the Nichols family, who were neighbors on the opposite side of the road to the east. 1840 Census-Lisbon, St. Lawrence Co, New York Christopher F.
