In October, 1846, Klaas left Sexbierum with his wife and seven children by cart for Harlingen. From there they set sail over the Zuider Zee to Rottersam. They wanted to go on the first ship with Dominie A. C. Van Raalte but there was no room.

Before they could set sail, each family had to provide all food for the journey, except water.

They set sail 19 October 1846 in the SS Isabella for New York. Violent stormes tossed the ship on the first part of the journey. The captain even nailed the holds shut at one point so no one could be tossed out. They arrived in New York 23 December 1846. The children thought that America was white, not realizing that is was snow.

Klaas sought out Dominie Thomas deWitt who gave him a letter of recommendation to Dominie Isaac Wyckoff in Albany, NY. To reach Albany, they sailed up the Hudson river until the steamboat was frozen in the ice. They boarded the recently completed railroad train for Albany. When arriving in Albany, they discovered that the ferry boat was also frozen in the ice, so they walked across the frozen river to reach their destination. It was no 24 December 1846, Christmas Eve. They spent the night in a packhouse.

Dominie Wyckoff helped Klaas and a son find work and a place to live. Here they stayed for 15 months. There was no church which spoke in Dutch, but they went anyway, comforted by the sanctuary. During that year they had measles, scarlte fever and chicken pox, but no one died.

Early in 1848, the family left for Michigan. They travelled to Troy from Albany, then by canal boat to Buffalo. Here they boarded a boat that took them through the Great Lakes to Grand Haven, Michigan. They came up the Grand River as fas as Grandville.

Now they walked overland through dense forest towards their land in section 22 of Zeeland Township, Ottawa County.It was a fiften mile trip, but tooke them two days. When they arrived, they stayed in the 13' by 16' home of their uncle, Dominie Marten A. Ypma until their own shanty was built.

The deVree family attended the Vriesland Reformed Church on Byron Road, west of 64th Avenue.

Klaas and Janse had 3 more children before she died in `858. She is buried in the Pioneer Plot of the Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Holland, Michigan. Klaas died in 1873 and is buried in the old burying ground of Gordon Street in Zeeland Township near the northwest corner of this cemetery.

Most of the rest of the deVree family has stayed in the Zeeland Township area
