THE OLD COMMAND Service History of Company "L" 126th U. S. Infantry July 15, 1917 to May 30, 1919 1917 Roster **** 1918 Roster Occupation of the Front Lines in Alsace-Lorainne, France From this time on, all data in this history has been obtained from other members of the organization, diary kept by the writer and from memory, due to the fact that all Company records after date of May 1st were either lost in fire, or in transit from one front to another. Organization left Railhead at Vaux, France at 6:30 a.m., Thursday, May 16th, and rode until 6 pm arriving at Arret, in Alsace. Organization detrained immediately, and were placed under cover to await darkness, when hiking was started toward rest billets a few miles back of the front lines. The hike was started at 10 pm, May 16th, but destination was not reached until 5 am, May 17th. Billets were taken over at Guevenatten, five kilometers from the front lines near Hecken, and the Company was allowed to rest up after the two severe hikes of the past two days. Saturday, May 18th, Captain Olsen returned to take command of the organization, having finally received his release as an instructor at the Army Candidates School, which he had requested, so as take ‘his boys’ into the lines, and command them. But putting in for his release, the Captain had forfeited considerable of his efficiency record, and it was indeed a great sacrifice for him to make, but it surely was appreciated by the fellows. During the night of May 20-21st, we had our first gas alarm, and although it proved to be a fake, it surely raised havoc with the Company for some time. No one had bothered to place their masks near them while sleeping, and the result was that when the alarm came, everyone made a grand rush for where they thought their masks were, and in the confusion very few found their right ones. However, it was only a fake, and the outfit learned a lesson, from which they profited may times afterwards. Company left barracks at Guvennatten at 9 pm, May 21st, arriving in the front lines at 3 am, May 22nd, and completed the relief of the 328th French Infantry at 5 am. This sector was called Center Resistance Gildwilder. Two platoons were placed in the front lines to take charge of observation posts, one platoon in reserve near the kitchen, and the other platoon in support at Company headquarters. The platoons in the front lines sent out a half section in the morning to take over the observation posts, and at night they were withdrawn. The support and reserve platoons furnished ration details, and did other work necessary. Friday night, May 24th, Lt. Bernard Broekema, commanding the first platoon took out an ambush patrol, which was supposed to wait for supposed patrol coming from the German lines, and to also reconnoiter….
Marne-Aisne Offensive (Chateau Thierry) Enroute to the Juvigny Engagement and Participation in Advance The trucks were boarded at 9:30 am, August 24th, 1918, and after an entire day’s ride, we were detrucked in the vicinity of Vic sur Aisne, near a small town name Jaulzy, where we spent two days while details for relief, etc. were being worked out, and liaison perfected as we were to fight as a part of the Tenth French Army under General Mangin. The men were comfortably bivouaced, and with plenty of good food, and the Aisne river only a short distance away for swimming, were very contented. At 9:50 pm, August 26th, the hike towards the lines was commenced, and at 5:30 am, August 27th, Company went into bivouac near Tartis, about three kilometers from the lines. This hike is one which will be long remembered by the remaining members of Company "L", both because of the amount of ground covered, and the number of miles gone back over on account of poor map reading, and incomplete orders from the higher officers. At 9 pm., August 27th, the balance of the hike to the lines was started and at 2:15 am, August 28th, the relief of a company of the 355th Regiment Infantry (French) was completed. At the time of completing the relief of the French, the Company had only three platoons, and these with only from twenty-four to twenty-six men each. Only meager information could be obtained from the French as to positions, and on account of the extreme darkness poor positions were established. Company "L" held the right flank of the Division, and were in liaison with the 59th Division of French Infantry. At 5:30 am orders were received to attack the German positions. The Headquarters section of the Company under command of Captain Olsen, and accompanied by Lt. Beal advanced under shelter of a filled roadway to …… Company was held in reserve until Friday, September 6th, when we were hiked back to our former area near Jaulzy. During our stay in the reserve positions Captain Olsen was compelled to leave the Company and go to a base hospital for ear treatment, and the Company was placed in command of Lt. Crippen of the 85th Division, and Lt Panken was assigned to assist him. Promotions: Sergeant to first sergeant: Harold E. Keenan; mechanic to supply mechanic, Alvin Jonker; corporals to sergeants: Tysman, Fazakerley; mechanic to corporal: Cournyer. Word was received of the death of Vint Phillips in a French hospital. He enlisted in Company G, 32nd Michigan Infantry, and at the time of the re-organization of the National Guard at Waco, TX, was transferred to Company L, 126th Infantry. While serving in the trench sector of Alsace-Lorraine he was suddenly taken ill and moved to the French hospital at Belfort, France. He died on the 26th August 1918, from diphtheria. Company remained in bivouac near Jaulzy until 6:25 am, September 8th, when we were moved into bivouac near Mortfontaine. At 6 pm, September 10th, Company again moved to railhead and 8:30 am, September 11th, entrained. Passed tow miles outside of Paris, and at 7:30 am, September 12th, detrained at Joinville, and hiked to Osne le Val, where we were to train and receive replacements. Charles F. Comiska of Alpena, Mich., enlisted at Grand Haven, July 19th, 1917, and served through the engagements at the Vesle River with Company "L". He was killed in action near Juvigny, August 28th, 1918, while advancing with his platoon, his body being pierced by fifteen machine gun bullets.
Osne le Val; Training and Receiving Replacements And Trip Toward the Lines Company arrived at Osne le Val at 10 am, September 12th, and were immediately assigned to billets. The first two days were spent in getting completely outfitted in new clothing and checking up all shortages in ammunition, belts, automatics, and other war supplies. At this time Lt. J. MacDonald, formerly of the Machine Gun Co., 126th Infantry, was given command of the Company, and Lt. Pauken was assigned second in command. The fighting spirit of the Company remained the same, but inwardly everyone felt quite blue. The Company ……….
Occupation and the Trip Home The information given in this chapter has been furnished the writer through the courtesy of Theodore Krause and Frank Dushane. At the time the Armistice was signed, Company L as part of the 126th Infantry was prepared to go into the lines for the second hitch of the great Argonne drive. The Company was then located at Breherville, and although in the reserve positions, had had no casualties since being relieved the 21st of October. Company stayed at Breherville from November 11th to 13th, and then started on that long-to-be-remembered hike to the Rhine. Stays in villages in Luxemburg and Germany during the hike were as follows: Removille, Nov. 13-17; Colmey, Nov. 17-18; Longway, Nov.18-19; Mont St. Martin, Nov. 19-20; Selange, Nov. 20-21; Kiespelt, Nov. 21-22; Altlmster, Nov. 22-23; Echternach, Nov. 23-Dec. 1; Mechel, Dec. 1-2; Dudeldorg, Dec.2-3; Grosslinteeigen, Dec. 3-5; Daun, Dec. 5-6; Reimerath, dec. 6-7; Alenz, Dec. 7-8; Mayen, Dec. 8-9; Obermending, Dec. 9-10; Miensheim, Dec. 10-11; Kitteg, Dec. 11-13; Gladbach, Dec. 13-15; Rengedorf, Dec. 15-17; Weiss, Dec. 27-Apr. 19, 1919. During the stay at Rengedorf, guard duty and drills took up the largest part of the time. At Weiss, the Company was on the target range for three weeks, and also furnished guards. Drills were held daily. The extreme cold, and considerable snow and ice handicapped the Company a great deal both for …. |
