Peter J. Caauwe
Peter J. Caauwe. 58, of Midlothian, Illinois, formerly of 10643 Wentworth, died
Friday, October 12, in St. Francis hospital, Blue Island.
Born in Holland, Michigan, January 4, 1893, he was a resident of this community
for one year and was an employee of the Coca Cola Company. He was the husband of
Elizabeth; father of Neal M., Richard P. Caauwe, and Mrs. Dorothy Mc Cardie.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 15, at 2 p.m. from the funeral home
at 10928 Michigan to the Community Bible Church, of Midlothian, 111. With the
Rev. Harold Brouwer in charge, interment was in Oak Lawn cemetery. Suburbanite

Henry T. De Weerd
After an illness of nine weeks with heart trouble and complications, Henry T. De
Weerd passed away Sunday night at 11:40 p.m. at his home in Orange City.
Mr. De Weerd was born in Holland, Michigan May 6, 1874, and came to Sioux County
at the age of 8.
He was married to Miss Hattie Vander Kooi on February 26, 1902, and lived at
Sioux Center for 30 years. They then moved to Orange City, living here for .12
years. His wife preceded him in death four months ago. Surviving are five
children, Alice (Mrs. Sy Hulstein) of Sioux Center, Tony of Orange City, Fred of
Sioux Center, and the Misses Christina and Sue at home. There are seven
grandchildren.
Surviving also is a sister, Mrs. H. Dieters of Sioux Center.
Funeral services were held Wednesday in the First Christian Reformed Church with
the Rev.R. Bronkema officiating. Interment was made in the Sioux Center
cemetery.

Mrs. Dorothy H Mills Thompson
SOUTH HAVEN - Mrs. Dorothy H Thompson, 49 Of Chetek, Wisconsin, died Friday in
Rice Lake. Wisconsin. She was born in Holland. Michigan and is a former resident
of South Haven. Survivors include her husband, James, five sons, Tom, Korea,
Timothy. Fort Bragg. N.C., Paul, Matthew, and Andrew, all at home; two
daughters, Maureen and Laura, both at home: her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John
Mills, Holland. Mich, and one sister. Mrs. Elizabeth Strazanac, Muskegon.
Funeral services will be held on Monday al 2 p.m. at the Calvin funeral home
here. Burial will be in Lake View cemetery. Friends may call between 7 p.m. and
9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home

50th Anniversary
Approximately 50 relatives will help
Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Van Otterloo celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary here
today. The event will be marked at the Steve Van Otterloo home this evening and
tomorrow afternoon an open house will be held from two to five- pm in the Van
Otterloo, home.
Expected at the observance will be children of the golden anniversary couple,
grandchildren, sisters and brothers. The occasion will be marked in the evening.
The Van Otterloos were married March 11, 1898 at Doon Iowa at the home of the
bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Simon Cooima.
They moved southwest of Rock Valley and lived there for several years'. From
there they moved to .their own farm located northwest of Rock Valley where they
lived for 29 years. In 1938 they moved to Rock Valley, where they lived
since-that time.
Mr. Van Otterloo was born in Holland, Michigan in 1873 and Mrs.Van Otterloo was
born in the Netherlands in 1876. Both are members of the' Christian Reformed
church. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Van Otterloo, one deceased in
infancy. Their children are Lena (Mrs. Frank Van Pykeren) of Hull Steve and
Tracy (Mrs Andrew Koedam) of Rock Valley, Sam and John of Rock Valley, Anna (Mrs
Ray Mulder) of Hull, Alice (Mrs Jake Gravengoed) of Judson, and Clifford, also
of Rock Valley.

Jurrien G. Raak, pioneer resident of Sioux county,
died at his home at Orange City on Friday, September 6, after an illness of many
months. An operation was performed in the hope of benefitting his health and he
made a courageous fight to regain his old time spirit, but without avail.
Jerry, as everyone called him, was born at Holland, Michigan, January 4. 1864.
He came to Sioux county with his parents while still a boy, and helped with the
work on the farm south of Orange City where the family settled. Later he became
an apprentice in the blacksmith shop of E Van Olst and became an expert
blacksmith.
He married Miss Ellen Van Olst at Orange City in June, 1SS5, and Mr. Raak was in
the blacksmithing trade at the county seat for many years. Eleven children were
born to the couple, but two' preceded their father in death, one child dying in
infancy and Mrs. Ida Popma passing away 9 years ago. Besides his helpmate, he is
survived by their nine children, as follows: Mrs. J. De Raad, Kingsley, la.;
Mrs. Ring De Jager, Orange City; Gerrit, Edward and Raymond Raak, Orange City;
Jerry Raak, Hospers; Paul Haak, Ocheyedan; Elmer and Earl Raak, Chicago, m. His
brother John Brookings, S. D., also survives.
Rev. Bert Brower, pastor of the American
Reformed church, was in charge of the funeral services which were held at the
Van Etten funeral home at Orange. City on Monday afternoon, . September 9, at
2:00 p. m. Interment was made at the Orange City cemetery. Among those who came
from away to attend the services were John Raak of Brookings, Mr. and Mrs. John
De Raad and children of Kingsley;_Mr. and .Mrs Paul Raak of Ocheyedan, Elmer and

Cora Irene Peerbolte, Mrs John
Patz of 455 E. 158th st. South Holland, died Tuesday. September 12, at the
home of her daughter, Antoinette Boers 14129 State st. Riverdale.
She was born in Holland. Michigan on August 21, 1898.
A resident of South Holland for 42 years, she was a member of the Calvary
Reformed Church of South Holland. Funeral services were held at the Calvary
Reformed Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 16, with Rev. Richard Vreesman
officiating. Interment was made in the Hazelwood Cemeterv. The
DeYoung-Vroegh Funeral Home. 649 E 162nd st. South Holland, was in charge of
arrangements. She is survived by her husband, John; one daughter, Antoinette
Boers of Riverdale, three sons, Donald of lbuquerque, New Mexico, John of
Chicago Heights and Gene of Harvey, two sisters, Mrs Henry Witteveen of Denver.
Colorado and Mrs. Charles Van Der Schaaf of Holland, Mich ; three brothers,
Anthony Peerbolte and Leonard Peerbolte, both of Holland, Mich, and Harry
Peerbolte of Detroit; and 13 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Carl, in 1943.

The Rev. Dr. Ame Vennema pastor of the First
Reformed Church of Passaic, New Jersey, died at his home there on Sunday. The
funeral was held at the church on Wednesday. He was born in Holland, Michigan,
on May 25, 1857. Dr. Vennema came to the New Paltz Church from the seminary at
New Brunswick in 1882 and remained as pastor until 1886. He is survived by his
wife, who was Miss Henrietta LeFevre, a son, A. Winston Vennema and two
daughters. Mrs. Edward Merrikle and Miss Florence Venaema ot Passaic and
Madison, New Jersey.

George F. Cropley
George F. Cropley, 76, of Arcata, died Sunday, December 25, after a lengthy
illness. He was the city clerk of Arcata and had been for several years. He has
been a resident of that city for 54 years.
He was born in Holland, Michigan. He has lived the past 13 years with his
sister, Mrs. Caroline Minor.
He is 'survived by his wife, Mrs. Juliette Cropley, his sister, Mrs. Minor and 3
nieces, Mrs. Marjorie Hollis of Loyalton California, Mrs. Edward Williams and
Mrs. Dorothy Hardy both of Oakland. Funeral arrangements are pending at Paul's
chapel, Arcata.

Albert Borgers
FARMER OF GREENWOOD VICTIM OF LOCKJAW - MARSHFIELD.-Albert Borgers, a farmer
near Greenwood, died at the hospital in the city Wednesday of lockjaw resulting
from an injury received by getting his left hand caught in a corn shredder about
two weeks ago. Two of the fingers were lost and the hand was mangled. The body
was taken to Greenwood.
The deceased was born in Holland, Michigan 54 years ago and moved to Greenwood
from Madison about eight years ago. He leaves his wife and seven children.

Herbert J. Brinks and Alice Van Kley
Herbert J. Brinks, beloved husband and father of Alice and Herbert, Jr., passed
away at the Cook County hospital, Chicago, on Saturday, Sept. 4, at the age of
29 years, 4 months and 2 days. His death was caused by high blood pressure. Mr.
Brinks had been ailing since May 1936, and was the victim of several
hemorrhages. His latest was one of the brain, which left him totally blind and
hysterical. Just before his death he had a hemorrhage of the kidneys.
Mr. Brinks was born in Holland, Mich., on May 2, 1908, where he was raised and
received his schooling. On August 3, 1931, he was married to Alice Van Kley and
resided here ever since. Funeral services were held Thursday, September 7, at
9:30 o'clock in the Bethany .Christian Reformed church, with Rev. J. O. Bouwsma
officiating. Burial was at Holland,Mich., cemetery. He leaves to mourn his death
his wife, Alice, and son Herbert, Jr., 2 years old; also Jive sisters, Mrs. F.
Vogel of Grand Rapids, Mich., Henrietta of Grand Raipids, Mrs. R Dekker of
Englewood; Mrs. John Anker and Mrs. John Van Kley of South Holland. He also
leaves three brothers; namely, Bert of Grand Rapids; Benjamin of Peoria and
Elmer of South Holland.

Jacob Meeboer and Gertrude De Young
Jacob Meeboer, formerly of South Holland, but late of Grand Rapids, Michigan,
passed away at the home of his niece, Mrs. J.Hauskechat, Grand Rapids, on
Tuesday, November G, at 10:20 p. m. His death was caused by pneumonia and heart
trouble. The body was transferred to Harvey, from where the funeral
will be held. The funeral services will be held Saturday. November 10, at 2
o'clock from the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. J O'Connor, with Rev. Graf,
pastor of the Harvey Federated church officiating. Those surviving are; his
wife, Mrs. Gertrude Meeboer; one daughter Mrs. Bessie 'Connor of
Harvey; one son. Raymond of South Holland; also four brothers, Bert of Grand
Rapids- John of Holland, Mich ; Albert ot Flint, Mich.; Gerrit of Green Bay
Mich.; three sisters. Mrs. Gerrit Kuizinger of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Alice
Reynolds, of Holland ,Mich.; and Mrs Henrietta Brown of Grand Rapids and three
grandchildren.
Mr. Meeboer was born in Holland, Mich, in 1872 and died at the age of 62 years.
In 1891 he came to South Holland and in 1891 married Gertrude De Young of this
locality. During his time in South Holland he serve for thirteen veara, as
agent of the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad resuming in 1916 to go to
Florida. In 1918 he returned and again was employed by the railroad, working out
of Haney station. For the last eight years he has been spending most of his time
on his farm in Grand Rapids. At the time of his death Mr. Meeboer was a social
member of the South Holland volunteer fire men. He was an active member from
1916 to 1932. In 1925 he was elected president of the Community Firemans
Association.
This was the year it was organized and he was greatly responsible for its
present existence . Mr Meeboer also served as village trustee of South Holland
for terms.

Steven Putnam
PULLMAN, May 9-Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in Holland, Mich.,
for Steven Putnam,
former resident and barber of Pullman, who died May 3. in his home in Holland.
He was 77 years old. Mr. Putnam went to Holland to live 24 years ago and was a
barber there until he retired a few years ago because of his ill health. He was
a member of the Trinity Reformed church at Holland and the Fennville Masonic
lodge. Surviving are his wife, Myrtle; three daughters, Mrs. Lester Overway,
Mrs. James Hlllebrand and Mrs. Gary Visscher, all of Holland, and one son. Carl
of Pontiac, Mich. A brother and sister also survive. Burial was in Pilgrim Home
cemetery at Holland.

Everett Vliek
DECATUR, May 9 - Everett Vlick, 66, died at his home here at 1 o'clock Monday
afternoon after an illness of several years.
Mr. Vliek was born In Holland Mich., on Jan. 19, 1884 .Son of Mr and Mrs. Willam
Vliek. He was married in 1907 to Miss Minnie Glide of Grand Rapids, who survives
him. He was a member of the First Reformed church of Decatur. Besides his wife,
Mr. Vliek leaves seven sons and three daughters- Willis, John, Edward. Donald,
Kenneth, and Mrs. Jennie Sikkema all of Decatur; Gordon of Kalamazoo; Mrs. Joan
Smith, and Lawrence, both of Hartford; and Cora Stamp of Cleveland, O. Surviving
Mr. Vliek also are 14 grandchildren; flive brothers, John of Cleveland, O., Joe
of Battle Creek, Jake of Kalamazoo, George of Decatur, and William of Sioux
City, In.; and two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Weissner of Kalamazoo. And Mrs. Reka
Essenberg of Holland Mich. Funeral services for Mr. Vlick will be conducted at
2:30 o'clock
Thursday afternoon at the First Reformed church here. The Rev. James Stegeman,
the church pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside cemetery. The
body of Mr. Vlick Is at the Newell & Sons funeral home.

Seane Kasten, Mrs. Dewey
Vander Schaaf
Mrs. Dewey Vander Schaaf, 65, of 2312 S. 10th St., died Monday evening at
Sheboygan Memorial Hospital after a prolonged illness. The former Seane Kasten,
she was born in Holland, Mich., on April 29, 1905, the daughter of the late
August and Lyda Kasten. She graduated from Holland High School, and attended
business-college in Holland. On Oct. 21, 1933, she married Dewey Vander Schaaf
in Holland. The couple moved to Sheboygan about 25 years ago. Her husband is a
vice president of Mullen's. Mrs. Vander Schaaf was a member of Hope Reformed
Church, and was a member of several women's circles and the church choir until
her illness. Survivors include her husband; one son, Rand. Fond du Lac; a
brother, August Kasten, Brighton, Mich., and two sisters, Mrs. Riemer Boersma
and Mrs. William Brouwer, Holland, Mich. One brother and one sister preceded her
in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hope Reformed
Church, with the Rev.Paul De Vries, officiating. Entombment will be in the
Garden Terrace Mausoleum. Friends may call at the Ramm-Ziegler Funeral Home from
4 p.m. Wednesday until 10:30 a.m. Thursday, and at the church after 11 a.m.

George H Kleis
George H. Kleis. 59, of R.2, Rapid .City, died Sunday morning at his home after
a sudden illness. The son of the late Henry and Hattie (Schippers) Kleis. he was
born at Holland. Mich., on Oct. 9. 1916, and was married to Edna Van on Aug.
25,1942 at Rapid City. Mr. Kleis lived in Kalkaska County from 1945 to 1957 when
he moved to the Holland-Grand Haven area where he was in commercial radio
broadcasting. He owned and operated radio station i WGHN. Grand Haven, from
1964-1972. He returned to Kalkaska County in 1972 and was employed as an
engineer by television station WGTU in Traverse City. He is survived by his
wife. Edna; two daughters. Mrs. Donald J. (Opal) Chilson of Williamsburg and
Mrs. Alan (Dana) Holleman of Galien: two brothers, Harvey and Raymond, both of
Holland. Mich.: three sisters. Mrs. John (Jean) Raak and Mrs. Harvey (Marian)
Scholten, both of Holland. Mich., and Mrs. Vaughn (Elaine) Jensen of Jackson:
his stepmother, Mrs. Henry Kleis of Zeeland; a stepbrother Harvey Kragt of
Holland. Mich.: two step-sisters, Mrs. James (Wilma) Weatherwax and Mrs. Dennis
(Lois) Steinfort, both of Holland, Mich.: and four grandchildren.
The funeral was held this afternoon at Faith Reformed Church of Traverse City,
of which he was a member. The Rev. Warren Burgess officiated. Burial was in
Clearwater Township cemetery, Kalkaska County.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Schwartz-Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.

Mrs. Gertrude Kuipers, 84. Of 10625 Wabash, died Monday, July 6, at her home,
ending a lingering illness. Born in Holland, Mich., July 24, 1858. she was a
resident of this community for 65 years and was a member of the Bethany Reformed
Church She was the wife of the late Peter; mother of Dena Huizenga, Hattie
Kuipers, Marie Baker, of Borne Grove, Ind, Grace Hoffman, of Holland, Mich,
Susan Kuipers, and the late Richard Kuipers, and sister of Nell Reeves, of Ann
Arbor, Mich. Five grandchidren, and four great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 9, at 1 30 p m from the Otto
Funeral Home with Dr Harry J. Hager in charge. Interment will be In Mount
Greenwood cemetery.

Richard Beekman
Sheboygan man killed in auto accident.
Richard Beekman, known by many in Sheboygan as "Dick" Beekman, was born in
Holland, Mich., and was the son of Mrs. John Beekman, 2026 Folger avenue. He
came to Sheboygan as a young man and has lived here most of his life. While in
the city he has assisted his brother Henry, who is a signpainter, and when away
he has been engaged in work for carnivals and shows. Deceased is survived by his
mother, three sisters, Mrs. William Kennhack, Mrs. U. Pheiler and Mrs. Rudolph
Spehn, three brothers, Henry, Albert and John, all of Sheboygan. The Rev.E L
Krueger of St. John's Evangelical church officiated and burial was made in the
Lutheran cemetery. The pallbearers were three brothers: Henry, Albert and John
Beekmann and three brothers-in-law, William Kennhack, U. Pfeiler and Rudolph
Spehn.

Dena Oggel, Mrs Jacob F De
Young
Funeral services for the late Mrs.De Young will be held at her home in Orange
City this Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Dr. Hoffman of New Brunswick
Seminary will preach the sermon Friends were shocked to hear of the death of
Mrs. J. F. De Young on Tuesday morning in a Chicago hospital. Mrs. De Young
left for Chicago about two weeks ago to visit her son, Dr.Marion De Young, and
to consult doctors. A gall bladder operation was performed last week from which
she rallied and reports had been encouraging until her husband received the
phone message of her death on Tuesday noon. Her sons. Dr. G. M. De Young and
Russell, were both present in Chicago: at the time of the operation and since
that time all reports stated that she was getting along nicely. Everything that
could have been done was done for her. The body arrived in Orange City Wednesday
afternoon. Before her marriage to J. F. De Young in 1903 she was Dena Oggel,
daughter of the late J. M. Oggel who was for many years cashier in the pioneer
Hospers bank in Orange Citv.
She was born in Holland, Mich., and had just recently passed her 54th birthday
anniversary. Besides her husband and the two sons, Mrs. De Young is survived by
three brothers, as follows: E. C. Oggel of Seattle, Wash.: Dr. H. D. Oggel of
Maurice and J. H. Oggel of Beverly Hills, California, as well as by cousins and
other relatives. Mrs. De Young was active in community affairs and in the work
of the American Reformed church of which she was a member. She will he sadly
missed by those who just a few scant weeks ago whi bid her a light and happy
farewell until the time when she would soon return. The sympathy of all are
extended to the bereaved family in the hour of their great sorrow.

Miss Grace Matrau - Windsor, June 3.-Miss Grace
Matrau, 60, died here at 8 a.m. Monday after a long illness. She was residing at
the home of Mrs. Myrtle Teller, Funeral services will be held at the Windsor
Episcopal church Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. After the services the body will
shipped to Lincoln, Nebr., and buried beside her parents. Miss Matrau was born
In Holland, Mich., April 19, 1875, moved to Lincoln early in life and moved to
Colorado later. She has spent most of her life in Windsor, engaged in the coal
business, despite her poor health.
She is survived by two sisters, Mrs C. A. McKim of Windsor, Mrs E.B Lewis of
Lincoln. Nebr.; a brother,
H.J Matrau of Chicago, Ill, and a nephew, Eugene MCKim of Denver.

Miss Aleida J. Pieters,
Milwaukee, April 6. Miss Aleida J. Pieters, dean of Milwaukee-Downer college
since 1921, died today after an illness of one week She was 59 years old. Miss
Pieters, who also was professor of government and history at the college,
attended Milwaukee- Downer from 1895 to 1897, Michigan State Normal school, the
University of Michigan, and Colombia University. She was a member of the
National Association of Deans of Women, the American Political Science
Association the American Association of University Women and a member of Phi
Beta Kappa.
She was born at Holland, Mich. She is survived by two brothers and a sister, the
Rev. Albertus J. Albertus J. Pieters, professor of biblical literature at Hope
college. Dr. Adrian J Pieters, an agronomist of the United States department of
agriculture at Washington, and Miss Jennie A. Pieters, a music teacher in a
mission school in Japan.

DILLON, Feb. 8. Paul De Clark, 76. an inmate of the Beaverhead county farm, died
today following a brief illness. He was born In Holland, Mich., January 7. 1865,

Roy James Schaeffer
SAUGATUCK, Nov. 11- Funeral services for Roy James Schaeffer, 49, were held this
afternoon from
the home of his mother, Mrs Thomas W. Eaton, of Pleasant Ave Rev. H. E. Maycroft
officiated. Mr Schaeffer, who had been in ill health for some time, died In
University hospital. Ann Arbor, Saturday evening, following an operation.
He was born in Holland, Mich., June 15, 1892, and moved to the vicinity of
Saugatuck when about 14 years of age. In later years he moved to a farm near
Monon, Indiana, where he resided until about a year ago, when he and Mrs.
Schaeffer returned to make their home on their farm north of this village.
Survivors are the mother, Mrs. Thos. W. Eaton; his widow, Abbie, one son, Wayne
Schaeffer of Holland, and one daughter, Evelyn Grace Schaeffer of LaFayette,
Indiana. Burial was in Riverside cemetery, Saugatuck.

Funeral services for Francis M Brooks, marine engineer for the G&H Towing Co.,
will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at the J. Levy & Bro. funeral home.
Dr. Mark C. Magers will officiate and Interment will be In Galveston Memorial
Park. Mr. Brooks died yesterday afternoon at the United State Marine Hospital
where he was taken on Tuesday morning after he became ill aboard his vessel at
Texas City. Surviving are; His widow Mrs; Effie E. Brooks; three daughters, Miss
Rosie Brooks. Mrs. Elmo R. Jordan and Mrs. Roy W. Johnson, all of Galveston; one
son, Z. F. Brooks of Pasadena, Tex.; one sister. Mrs. Belle Hebert of Los
Angeles, Cal., and three grandchildren
Mr. Brooks was born In Holland, Mich., Jan. 9, 1883. He came to Galveston In
1918. Entering the employ of the Suderman-Young Towing Co., and, later, the
concern employing him at the time of his death. He was a member of Tucker Lodge
No. 297 AF & AM of the Odd Fellow Lodge No. 8.

Maude Brower , Mrs Burt Williams
Mrs. Burt Williams, whose husband is director of promotion of Consolidated Water
Power and Paper company, died at 9:50 Tuesday night at Riverview hospital
following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held at the Stanton W.
Mead residence, 730 First avenue south, at 2:30 Thursday afternoon, the Rev.
Robert W. Kingdon, officiating.
Maude Brower Williams was born at Holland, Mich., June 10,1878, one of nine
children born to Capt. And Mrs. Frank Brower. Captain Brower and his family
moved to Ashland, Wis,, in 1888, where the father owned and operated a number of
passenger and tug boats for many years. She was married to Burt Williams
February 24, 1903, the latter being mayor of Ashland and the publisher of a
daily newspaper there at that time. In 1914, Mr. Williams was appointed U. S.
collector of internal revenue and he and his wife moved to Madison. Later, the
family lived in Washington, D. C-, where Mr. Williams served as head of internal
revenue collectors for the United States. In 1919, Mr. Williams resigned his
Washington position to form a tax and accounting organization in Milwaukee. In
1933, the Williams family moved to Wisconsin Rapids. In addition to her husband,
Mrs. Williams is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Stanton W. Mead, and a son,
Gilbert D. Williams, who recently moved to Wisconsin Rapids after having served
for nine years as a member of the Purdue university faculty. There are four
grandchildren. The body was taken from the Baker and Son funeral home to the
Mead residence late this afternoon. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery.

Engelbert Christian Oggel
Maurice: Engelbert Christian Oggel died suddenly Friday morning, January 5, of
coronary occlution. He was the second child and son of the late Mr. and Mrs. J.
M. Oggel of Orange City.
Engelbert Oggel was born in Holland, Mich, on April 13, 1871. With his parents,
sister, and three brothers, he came to Pella, Iowa, in 1887, after living a few
months in Kalamazoo, Mich. In the autumn of 1882, the family moved to Orange
City. He was educated in the Orange City schools, graduating from Northwestern
Classical Academy in 1887, and from Iowa State College in Ames, in 1891. He
then taught Mathematics and Physics in the Orange City Academy for three years.
In the autumn of 1894 he was elected Clerk of the District Court of Sioux
County, and reelected in 1896.
He was married to Lulu C. Robinson of Orange City on October 19, 1897. No
children were born to them, but they raised three children of Mrs. Oggel's
brother. In 1898 he matriculated in the Law School of Northwestern University in
Chicago, graduating in 1901. He practiced law for about 5 years in Los Angeles,
California. With several associates, he organized the Spokane Title Insurance
Co. of Spokane, Wash., and in 1921 he accepted the' position of Chief Counsel
and Vice-pres. of the Washington Title Insurance Co. He pursued his legal
practice for twenty years, until his wife's health and his own heart condition
compelled his retirement in January, 1941. They moved to Los Angeles,
California at the advice of their physician. His wife preceded him in death,
passing away January 11 1944. Mr. Oggel then came to Maurice to stay in the home
of his brother, Dr. Herman Oggel. Both Mr. and Mrs. Oggel were members of the
First Presbyterian Church of Seattle, and he served as Elder for many years As
a lawyer in his specialty that of Title Law, he was most favorably known on the
Pacific Coast.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, January 8 at the Dr. Oggel home.
The remains will be shipped to Los Angeles, where interment will be made in
Forest Lawn.

HARTFORD, Conn., March 15, 49, professor of anthropology at the Kennedy School
of Missions at the Hartford Seminary Foundation, died today at Hertford
Hospital. He was seized with a heart attack at his home, Tuesday. A widely
recognized authority on Mayan culture, Steggerda was born in Holland, Mich.

The funeral service for Harry E. Jones. 68 resident of Pitchford's. who passed
away last Thursday night was held in Johns Funeral Home, Stuart. Rev J O.
Jameson, pastor of the First Methodist Church officiating. He and his wife were
former residents of Antigo, Wisconsin.. He was a retired automobile mechanic
.Born in Holland, Mich , he was a World War I veteran and member of the Veterans
of Foreign Wars Besides his wife he leaves a brother in Somonauk, Illinois.
Burial took place in All Saint's cemetery, Jensen Beach.

Dr. John E. Winter,
Dr. John E. Winter, who retired in 1948 as head of the department of psychology
and philosophy at the University, died yesterday after a short illness. He was
81. Funeral services will be held here at 2 p.m. Saturday at Davidson Funeral
Home and burial will be in Holland, Mich., where Mrs. Winter is buried. Dr.
Winter was a resident of 325 Grandview Avenue. He came to Morgantown in 1921 to
accept a position as professor of psychology at the University. He was advanced
to head of the department in 1929.
Born in Holland, Mich., Feb. 28, 1878, he was a graduate of Hope College and the
University of Michigan from which he received his PhD in 1917. Before coming to
Morgantown, he had taught at Goshen College, the University of North Dakota and
Parsons College. Dr. Winter was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the
Kiwanis Club and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a member of the
executive council of the Boy Scouts of America and taught the Roughneck Bible
Class at his church. He had also served for many years on the Salvation Army
advisory board. Dr. Winther held membership numerous professional and scientific
societies, including American Association for the Advancement of Science, the
American Psychological Association, and the Southern Society for Philosophy
psychology of which he was ex-president. Surviving Dr. Winter is a son John
Lawencer Winter of Huntington Ind. and two grandchildren, children of his
deceased son James Edwin Winther who died in 1939.

Mrs Gertie Vanden Berg passed away very
suddenly Tuesday morning at 9:30. She had been staying with her daughter Mrs
Marcus Schoneville the past few years. Funeral services will be held at the
Christian Reformed Church this Saturday afternoon. She leaves to mourn her loss,
thirteen children, Bert of Big Horn, Wyoming, Jerry of Clear Lake,S. D., Grant
of Brookings, S. D, Lila of Lakewood, Calif. All the other sons and daughters
live in and around Volga, S. D. She was born in Holland, Mich., March 1875, and
came to S. D. in 1908.

George Tuft Smith
ANACONDA-George Tuft Smith, 69, of San Clemente, Calif., died Tuesday in St. Ann
Hospital. He was visiting Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Nelson, 70t Chestnut, when he was
stricken ill and underwent surgery Sept. 8. He was here with his brother, Carl
E. Smith, on their way from Michigan to California. He was born in Holland,
Mich., June 12, 1893. He attended schools in Michigan and served with the Army
in Europe during World War 1. He was a U.S. Immigration officer in Michigan for
32 years retiring in 1953. His wife died in1955. Funeral services will be at
4:30 Wednesday al the Fischer Funeral Chapel. Rev. Howard Huff will officiate.
The body will be sent 'o Sault St. Marie. Mich. Thursday morning where
additional funeral services and burial will be conducted.

Bartel Blink Died
Bartel Blink, formerly a resident of Dolton for 27 years, passed away Sunday
morning, June 1st at home, 15 West 17th street, Holland Mich., aged 75 years, 2
months and 27 days. -Mr. Blink and family moved from Dolton on a farm at North
Holland, Mich., in 1900 and in 1915 retired from active work and moved to his
present address. His health gradually broke down for the past two years and
three weeks ago he became bedridden.
He was born in the Netherland; March 5, 1849 and came to America with his
parents in 1856 and settled in Ferrysburg, Mich., and a few years later came to
South Holland, Illinois. At the age of 10 years he lost his mother by death,
after which time he was reared by his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wierma.
He was married April 7, 1873 to Minnie Voss. Eight children, three sons and five
daughters were born to this union. He is survived by his widow and three sons,
William and Albert of Chicago, and Henry of Holland; and three daughters, Miss
Jane Blink of Chicago; Abigal (Mrs.Wm. Douma) of Holland; and Henrietta (Mrs.
Paul Schilleman) of Hollland Township and six grandchildren, Mabel (Mrs. Joe
Boomker), Seymour and Esther Blink of Chicago, Chester and Delbert Schilleman
and Hazel Douma of Holland, Mich.; also two great grandchildren, Ruth and Joyce
Boomker. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, June 4th, at 2.00
o'clock from his home, Rev. Heemstra and Rev. Tysse officiating. Interment at
Pilgrim Home cemetery, Holland.

Miss Joanna Niemeyer
FORMER LOCAL TEACHER DIES IN MINNESOTA
Miss Joanna Niemeyer, a former resident of Benton Harbor and teacher in the
public schools, died early Thursday morning at St. Paul Minn., following a three
and one half years illness. Miss Niemeyer was born at Holland, Mich., moving to
Benton Harbor when 12 years of age. She graduated from the Benton Harbor
high school and from the Michigan State Normal school at Ypsilanti after which
she taught in Benton Harbor.
Leaving Benton Harbor, she attended the Minnesota state University and taught
art in the StPaul public schools until three and one-half years ago when she
retired on account of ill health. She is survived by her sister, Miss Gertrude
Niemeyer, and three brothers. John, Lambert and Reinder, all of St. Paul.
Funeral services will be at 2 p. m Tuesday from the Third Reformed church at
Holland. Burial will be in the Pilgrim Home cemetery there.

Heart Attack Fatal To Saugatuck Man
SAUGATUCK. Dec. 5-Birt A. Lockhart, 67, died suddenly Sunday afternoon in his
home in Douglas, as the result of a heart attack. He had suffered a similar
attack about a week ago. Born in Holland. Mich., Aug. 22. 1877, Mr. Lockhart had
for many years been employed as a steward on boats plying the Great Lakes.
Retiring from active service, he and Mrs. Lockhart came to reside in Douglas
about 15 years ago. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Helen Lockhart. Funeral
services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 in the Douglas
Congregational church, the Rev. Albert Dawe officiating. Burial will be in
Pilgrim Home cemetery. Holland, and graveside services will be conducted by
Dutcher Lodge, No. 193, F. & A. M. of Douglas.
Agnes Murchie, Mrs Charles Selby
Mrs. Charles (Agnes) Selby, 78, of Holland died suddenly Sunday night at the
home of her daughter, Mrs. Lester (Marj) Exo, in Traverse City. Agnes Murchie
was born January 1. 1887 in Traverse City, attended local schools, and had been
a resident of Holland since 1922. Through the Netherlands Museum in Holland,
Mrs. Selby's collection of 40 Dutch paintings was displayed at the Northwestern
Michigan College library in December. On May 25. 1907 she was married to Mr.
Selby, who died on October 27, 1963. Surviving besides Mrs. Exo are a son,
Thomas of Holland, a brother, Robert Murchie of Traverse City: three
grandchildren: and three nephews. funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday at Hope Reformed church. Holland, with burial ill Holland Pilgrim Home
cemetery. The body was taken today to Notier funeral home at Holland from
Reynolds funeral home in Traverse City.

Lucy S Sturrop, Mrs Jerry P Schutt
Mrs. J.P. (Lucy S.) Schutt. 97, formerly of Rock Valley died March 26, 1982, at
Memphis, Tenn. Services were held March 30, 1982, at the Notier-Ver Lee-Langeland
Chapel in Holland, Michigan, with Rev. Marion Pennings, a half brother,
officiating. Burial was in the Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Holland, Mich. Lucy S.
Sturrop was born April 25, 1884, in Lincoln County, Nebraska. She attended
Northwestern Academy in Orange City and later married Jerry P. Schuft on
November 27, 1907. They moved to Rock Valley from Sioux Center in 1934 and Mr.
Schutt was president of the Valley State Bank for many years before retiring in
1958. While in Rock Valley Mrs. Schutt was active in the . Pioneer United
Methodist Church, the Federated Women's Club, and other community projects. She
is survived, by :two sons,. Paul J. and .Robert L., one daughter, Kathleen J.
Richardson of Memphis, Tenn. seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Michael Seery
Michael Seery died at his home Saturday afternoon after a long illness at the
age of 75 years. Mr Seery has been a resident of this city for nearly 50 years,
coming here before the fire took place in 1871. He leaves besides a widow, six
children, two sons, Fred of Cadillac, and Cecil residing at home, and four
daughters; Mrs Louis Skeels of Muskegon, Mrs Henry Wilson of Port Huron; Mrs
Edward Stephan of this city, and Miss May at home. The funeral for Michael Seery
was held Tuesday morning at 9 o`clock in the St Francis Church.

Eleanor Seery, Mrs Edward Stephan
Mrs Eleanor Stephan, 78, widow of the late Edward Stephan, formerly of Holland,
Mich. Died in Santa Maria Hospital early Thursday morning. She was the former
Eleanore Seery, daughter of Mr and Mrs Michael Seery, pioneers who came to
Holland in 1870. She was born and grew up in Holland, and graduated from Holland
High School in 1910. Her husband was the son of Evert Ph. Stephan, former mayor
of Holland.
Surviving are on daughter; Mrs William (Eileen ) Ward of Santa Maria, one
brother-in-law, Henry W Wilson, and one sister-in-law, Mrs Gertrude Seery, both
of Holland, two nieces, Mrs Ernest Dahlman and Miss Ruth Seery, both of
Muskegon, and one nephew, Dr Thomas Seery of Austin, Minn. Funeral services will
be held at Sun Set View Chapel, and burial at Sun Set Cemetery in Berkely,
California Monday morning.

Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Gullans, 12026 S. Harvard ave.. will hold open house Sunday,
August 15. afternoon and evening, to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary.
The couple has two sons. Roger Gullans of Indianapolis, and John Gullans, 12157
S. Michigan ave., and two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Bowman, 8909 S. Utica ave.,
Evergreen Park, and Mrs. James Campbell of Neoga, Illinois. Their other son,
Sgt. Harry Gullans, is deceased. There are five grandchildren, Lloyd and Judy
Bowman of Exergreen Park, and Nancy, David and Gary Gullans of Indianapolis.
Mrs. Gullans, the former Mae Kammeraad, was born in Holland, Mich., and her
husband is a native of Mass, Mich. They were married in Chicago on August 17,
1929, in the Roseland Presbyterian church, where they still worship. Both also
belong to Square post of the American Legion and its auxiliary, respectively.
Mr. Gullans is patron of Fides chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, where his
wife serves as treasurer. He is chief filtration chemist for the South district
filtration plant, 79th st. and the Lake, and also is a colonel in the reserves,
322nd logistical command.

Mr. and Mrs. John David Schriner,
6416 L,aflin st., celebrated their silver wedding anniversary recently with a
dinner for 25 guests. They are the parents of Mrs. Henrietta Perfetto, 7914
Hermitage ave.; Alice Schriner, who lives at home with her parents and Pvt. John
Schriner, who is serving in the ordnance department at Camp Maxey, Tex.
Mrs. Schriner was born in Holland, Mich., and her husband in Lawton, Mich. They
were married in the parsonage of Atonement Lutheran church and she is now a
member of Drexel Park Presbyterian church and a member of the church Red Cross
unit. She enjoys gardening as her hobby. Mr. Schriner has been employed as a
packer with Spiegels, Inc., for the past four years. Four generations were
present at the celebration: Mrs. Schriner's father, John Pol, 6330 Laflm st.;
Mr. and Mrs. Schriner; the couples' daughter, and four grandchildren, Jean, Nola
and Rita Pertetto and Alta Marie Schriner. Other guests were Charles Loerke of
Duluth and Mrs. Jennie Branigan, 3401 Wallace st. Mrs. Schriner's sister, Mrs.
W. W. MacDonald of Stafford, N.Y., was a recent visitor in the home, but was
unable to attended the celebration.

50th Anniversary
Approximately 50 relatives will help Mr. and Mrs. H.S. Van Otterloo
celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary here today. The event will be marked at
the Steve Van Otterloo home this evening and tomorrow afternoon an open house
will be held from two to five- pm in the Van Otterloo, home.
Expected at the observance will be children of the golden anniversary couple,
grandchildren, sisters and brothers. The occasion will be marked in the evening.
The Van Otterloos were married March 11, 1898 at Doon Iowa at the home of the
bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Simon Cooima.
They moved southwest of Rock Valley and lived there for several years'. From
there they moved to .their own farm located northwest of Rock Valley where they
lived for 29 years. In 1938 they moved to Rock Valley, where they lived
since-that time.
Mr. Van Otterloo was born in Holland, Michigan in 1873 and Mrs.Van Otterloo was
born in the Netherlands in 1876. Both are members of the' Christian Reformed
church. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Van Otterloo, one deceased in
infancy. Their children are Lena (Mrs. Frank Van Pykeren) of Hull Steve and
Tracy (Mrs Andrew Koedam) of Rock Valley, Sam and John of Rock Valley, Anna (Mrs
Ray Mulder) of Hull, Alice (Mrs Jake Gravengoed) of Judson, and Clifford, also
of Rock Valley.

Miss Wilhelmina Zwiers and
Mr. Edward Zwart Married Jan. 18th 1940
Miss Wilhelmina Zwiers and Mr. Edward Zwart were united in marriage at the home
of the bride's parents in Eagle township at 1 o'clock last Thursday afternoon.
The ceremony was performed by Rev. Andrew Folkema, pastor of the Christian
Reformed church of Hawarden, in the presence of about sixty-five invited guests.
Miss Bertha Zwiers, sister of the bride, played the wedding march. The bride's
wedding gown was of white lace. Following the wedding ceremony an attractive
luncheon was served to the guests. Thursday evening about forty young people
were guests at a reception at the Zwiers home and -the following evening a
reception for the newlyweds was held at Steen. Minn. The bride is a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Zwiers, long time residents of Eagle township, six miles
northeast of .Hawarden.
She was born at Holland, Mich., but came to this community as a small child
twenty-one years ago and her home has since been on the same farm with her
parents. She was graduated from the rural schools of Eagle township in 1931 and
since then has continued to reside at home. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Zwart of Steen, Minn. He was born at Rock Rapids and attended the rural
schools of Rock township, Lyon county, from which he was graduated in 1931. For
about five years he lived with his parents on a farm near Rock Valley but last
year they moved to a place near Steen, Minn., and the young couple will make
their home on a farm there where the groom will farm in partnership with his
father. They expect to go to Steen in about a week to begin housekeeping. The
best wishes of a host of friends will go with them to their new home.
