George Baxter was the son of John Baxter and Eliza. George Baxter married Mary and after Mary died, George married Polly. George Baxter died of congestion of the lungs on June 13, 1856, according to a June 17, 1856, Grand Rapids newspaper. He left a wife and two children. George Baxter is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Lamont, Michigan. According to information recorded on the tall Baxter monument, George was 37 years old when he died.

Elmwood Cemetery was restored and gravestones were repaired by Henry and Loekie Boersma in 1995.The tall Baxter monument was placed in its original upright position with special equipment and lots of hard work. The cemetery is now maintained by Tallmadge Township.
