Holland City News, November 28, 1914 Attended Funeral; Dies Suddenly North Shore Man is Dead at the Age of Seventy Years Orris Buchanan Orris Buchanan, aged 70 years, a resident of Buchanan Beach on the North Shore of Black Lake for about 30 years, died suddenly from apoplexy early today. He leaves one daughter. Mr. Buchanan was driving home from Capt. Jennings’ funeral and stopped at a farm home on the way. He was later found unconscious in an outbuilding. He was an old soldier and a member of A. C. Van Raalte Post, G. A. R. (Buried in Lakeshore Cemetery.) Holland City News, February 20, 1913 Orris Buchanan, Gettysburg Veteran Efforts have been made to discover all those who had taken part in the famous Battle of Gettysburg and as a result another veteran was found in Ottawa County. This was Orris Buchanan of Holland, Rural Route Number 8. He went to the war when he was not yet 18 years old and he was only 18 when the Battle of Gettysburg was fought. He enlisted as a member of the Fifth Michigan Cavalry, Company I, and he fought under General Custer and Colonel Alger. |
