Holland City News, September 22, 1921 Another Member of Co. I Passes Away U(ilke?) De Vries The Death of Mr. U. De Vries Saturday, at the age of 70 years, removed another member of the rapidly dwindling number of those who enlisted in Co. I of the 25th Michigan. Mr. De Vries was born in the Netherlands and came to America as a child of four, settling in this vicinity. During the Civil War he enlisted in Co. I and after about a year he received an honorable discharge for disability, but he was not satisfied to remain out of the conflict and so reenlisted in another regiment, serving honorably until the close of the war. He married Miss Margaret Kanters, daughter of the late ex-mayor, R. Kanters, and he was engaged in business until 1897. He is survived by one brother, R. De Vries of Drenthe, and four children: Mrs. F. H. Pifer, D. De Vries, Dr. R. C. De Vries and Dr. U. F. De Vries. The funeral was held on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 2 o’clock in the afternoon from the home of Dr. U. F. De Vries, 101 W. 15th Street. Interment was in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. |
