LAKE YIELDS THIRD VICTIM
Bodies of Hudsonville Trio Are Recovered by Searchers

Albert DeWeerd, Alden DeWeerd, Henry DeWeerd

Houghton Lake - The recovery Sunday from Houghton lake of the body of Alden DeWeerd, 9, was effected after previous dragging operations Saturday had resulted in the recovery of the body of his father, Albert, and that of his uncle, Henry. All three, from Hudsonville, were drowned in the lake Thursday.
The body of the youth was found floating on the lake Sunday afternoon shortly after rough water had forced a searching party to cease dragging operations, according to Trooper Ralph Glassford of the Houghton Lake state police post. The body was found by Herbert Schnaidt, Royal Oak, and Randell Bomming of Ferndale, vacationists.
The three bodies were removed to the James L. Young funeral home at Lake City, the trooper reported.
The body of the boy's father was recovered Saturday morning while that of Henry DeWeerd was located Saturday night after dragging operations had been in progress since Friday morning.
Albert DeWeerd, 49, ran a garage in Hudsonville for many years and was active in affairs in the village. His brother, 39, operated a trucking business and a threshing outfit.
According to state police, the brothers and the boy left Thursday in a boat rented from Charles Hendricks. The boat with an outboard motor was found Friday in 10 feet of water. A mile away the rear air chamber, life preserver and an oar were recovered.
Albert DeWeerd, a member of Hudsonville Congregational church and Grandville Masonic lodge, is survived by the widow, Hazel, and three children, Harriet, Rolland and Melvin.
Henry, a member of the Christian Reformed church, leaves the widow, Margaret, and three children, Crystal, Lavina and Mary Jane. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. C. Patmos of Forest Grove, and a brother, Peter, of Hudsonville.
