Ephraim Doane was born about 1820, in New York, the son of Allen Doane and Rhoda Hazen. The family moved to Ohio and later to Wright Township, Ottawa County, MI.

Of the settlers as early as 1848, locating in the vicinity of Coopersville, we are able to give the names of the following: Chauncey and Justus Stiles, Warren Streeter, Peter McNaughton, Richard Stiles, Abraham Peck, Josiah T. Lawton, Walter McEwing, who was the first to settle where Coopersville was afterwards located, Sylvester Jackson, Ephraim Doane, who was later murdered in St. Lewis, Henry Garter, Paul Averill, a Canadian who left that country on account of the "Patriot War", Daniel W. Scott, who established a tannery, the first between Grand Rapids and Grand Haven, on Deer Creek, a mile and a half southeast of Coopersville, Edward Streeter, John Averill, John N. Hopkins, and William Platt.
