Coopersville Observer, September 21, 1882 James H. Hedges Lamont—Died in this place, September 13, 1882, James Hedges, aged 39 years. The funeral was held at the residence, Rev. Kitzmiller officiating. The deceased was born in the same house in which he died, it being the only frame house in Lamont. (James H. Hedges was a veteran of the Civil, War. He served in Co. C, 10th Michigan Cavalry. He died in September 13, 1882, of consumption, according to Ottawa County death records. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Lamont, Michigan.) Civil War Gun Used by James Hedges
"Whitie" Nichols is holding the gun that his great-grandfather, James Hedges, used during the Civil War. James Hedges was on a secret mission called the "Stone Mountain Expedition." Their mission was to destroy six bridges over the Roanoke River in early 1865. This led to the surrender of Richmond and later the end of the Civil War.
