Silas A. Hedges was born about 1835, in New York, the son of Jeremiah Hedges and Mary Calkins.

Military Records:

Silas Hedges, age 22, married Catherine Walling, age 19, on December 31, 1857, in Ottawa County, Michigan, by Horace Hall, minister of the Methodist church. Witnesses were Elihue Walling and Mary Hedges, both of Lamont, according to marriage records. Two children were born: George W. Hedges, born February 9, 1859, Lamont, and Mary E. Hedges, born August 9, 1860, in Lamont.

Silas Hedges enlisted in Co. C, 10^th Michigan Cavalry, on February 14, 1865, and died on August 14, 1865, in Chattanooga, TN, of typhoid malarial fever, also recorded as remittent fever. W. D. Scott, former assistant surgeon of 10 MI Cavalry, stated that in early August 1865 he sent Pvt. Hedges to the Division Hospital at Sweetwater, East Tennessee, from the regimental camp, at the same place, suffering from severe typhoid malarial fever. Silas died at General Hospital, No. 1, Chattanooga, Tennessee, of remittent fever, according to surgeon J. H. Phillips. (Date of death is taken from widow’s pension application.)

Catherine Walling Hedges placed memorial stones in Maplewood Cemetery, Lamont, Michigan, for her husband, Silas Hedges. The memorial headstone for Silas was found flat on the ground, broken, unreadable, and covered with dirt. The footstone reads, S. A. H.

Catherine Hedges died July 15, 1866, according to pension records. The headstone of Catherine was found flat on the ground, covered with dirt and is unreadable. Catherine’s footstone reads C. W. H.

A notation in the Maplewood Cemetery records for Silas Hedges reads, "died in Civil War." There is no further burial information.
