Grand Rapids Herald, March 11, 1945 On February 22, Pfc. John H. Hoogewind, 31, on patrol duty with the European civil affairs division in France as a military policeman on alternate days, mentioned in a letter he was "in perfect health and am waiting to go home" and that he would be "off duty" on February 24. On that date, according to a message from the war department, he died. The message did not specify combat action and the family, in view of Pfc. Hoogewind’s "perfect health" is mystified as to what might have happened. He had been in the army three and a half years, overseas for a year. Previously he worked for Knape and Vogt Manufacturing Co. Besides the parents he is survived by a brother, Albert, and two sisters, Agnes and Grace, all of Grand Rapids.
John H. Hoogewind, son of Harm Hoogewind and Hattie Smoes Hoogewind, born May 12, 1913, in Michigan, died on February 24, 1945, in France, trying to settle a fight during his off duty hours as a military policeman. He is buried in Epinal Cemetery, France, located 4 miles south of Epinal, in Plot A, Row 36, Grave 40. |
