Rites Set for Civil War Vet

Madison Richards Expires at 94 at Residence of Granddaughter

Funeral services for Madison Richards, 94, believed to be the last Civil War veteran to reside in Holland, will be held Tuesday at 2: P.M. from the Nibbelink-Notier funeral chapel with the Rev. Nicholas Guesselink, pastor of the Reformed church, officiating. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.

Mr. Richards died Saturday noon at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Dick Wiersma, 298 West 22nd Street following an illness of complications due to his advanced age.

He was born August 10, 1846, in Pennsylvania. During the Civil War, Mr. Richards served as private in Company G, 25th Regiment, New York Cavalry.

He had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Wiersma for the past three years. Other survivors are another granddaughter, Mrs. Henry Vande Bunte of Grand Rapids and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may view the body at the Nibbelink-Notier chapel tonight.
