Adna Sherman was drafted for Civil War service on October 10, 1862, and was commissioned an officer on November 12, 1862. He was assigned duty as a surgeon in the 7^th Michigan Cavalry and was stationed in the war hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is listed on a consolidated.

Draft registration list of all persons of class 2 subject to do military duty in the Fourth Congressional District who were above the age of 35 and under the age of 45. Adna was mustered out on April 29, 1863.

To the Ladies :

Feeling grateful for the many acts of kindness conferred upon the men entrusted in our care, we the medical officers, 7^th Michigan Cavalry, feel encouraged to solicit from the ladies of Grand Rapids further contributions in the way of bandages and lint and other suitable materials for the dressing of wounds. Experience has shown that large supplies of the above named are needed etc.
