A Beloved Pioneer Gone

Lamont—Last Saturday afternoon, March 2, 1895, Mrs. Rebecca Steele passed into the great beyond, aged eighty-nine years. "Aunt Becky," as she was familiarly called, died of old age at the residence of her sister, Mrs. Jerry Hedges, with whom she made her home.

Deceased was the widow of Henry Steele, who died some thirty years ago. She was born in Clinton County, New York, May 28, 1806. About the year 1836, she removed to Michigan and settled in Lamont, formerly known as "Steele’s Landing," where they experienced all the trials of pioneer life.

She adopted the M. E. faith, living a good life, and was beloved and respected by all her friends. From her door the poor and afflicted were never turned away empted-handed. Her life was a wonderful example of patience and purity. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. J. Hedges and Mrs. E. Maxfield. The funeral services took place at her home on March 4, Rev. Brownell, officiating. (Buried in Maplewood Cemetery).
