Cpl. Elisha M. Swetland, Brady’s Sharpshooters, 16th MI Infantry

Elisha Swetland enlisted in Brady’s Sharpshooters, 16th Michigan Infantry, on October 21, 1861, age 36, in Detroit. He was wounded and died on October 9, 1864, at St. Mary’s Hospital, in Detroit, Michigan, of chronic diarrhea, according to his military records.

Elisha Swetland married Rhoda Ellen Reynolds on October 10, 1856, in Tallmadge Township, according to military pension records. Rhoda Ellen was previously married to Era Porter.

Elisha Swetland died on October 9, 1864, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Detroit.

According to military pension records, on November 17, 1864, Rhoda Ellen Swetland applied for pension for one child under the age of 16, May Swetland, born June 1, 1861. (Alice May)

Rhoda Ellen remarried to Peter Smith Beatty on January 26, 1865, in Lamont, MI, according to IGI. The family later moved to Indiana (1870 Census) and to Perris, Riverside, California. On the 1900 census records of Perris, Riverside, CA, Rhoda Ellen stated that she was born in NY, December 1832, and that she had 8 children, 7 living.

Edith M. Swetland, age 19, at school, was living with her uncle and aunt, William F. Nichols, engineer, and his wife, Ann Eliza. Ann Eliza Reynolds Nichols was a sister to Rhoda Ellen Reynolds Swetland, mother of Edith May Swetland.

Elisha Swetland is buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Lamont, Michigan.
