Holland City News, March 21, 1874 Andrew Thompson (Thomson) On Monday morning died in this city, Andrew Thompson, after a lingering disease of several months. Mr. Thompson came to this place shortly after the war, and was generally esteemed and respected. Attending to his own affairs, he was always willing to devote a due share of his time for the welfare of the public. To his perseverance and public spirit, in common with a few others, we owe much, if not all of the organization of our Fire Department. For several years he was Foreman of our "Eagle Fire Engine Co.", No. 1, and subsequently Chief Engineer of the Department. Mr. Thompson was 33 years old, and leaves a wife and three children. His remains were escorted to the grave by the Fire Department and Masonic Fraternity of which he was a member. Military records Cpl. Andrew Thompson (Thomson), was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. G, 1st Michigan Engineers and Mechanics, on September 9, 1861, in Grand Rapids, for 3 years, age 21. He re-enlisted in 1864. He was mustered out on February 1, 1865. . Andrew Thompson married Mary Sutfin, in Grand Rapids, Mi, on November 29, 1866, by Rev. Goodman. Children Gertrude, born November 5, 1867 Jeremiah Wilson, born June 5, 1870, died August 19, 1881 Jennie, born May 5, 1873 Richard Heald testified that he saw Andrew Thompson very soon after his final discharge from the service and that from his appearance and conversation with him he was evidently in the final stage of consumption. He had pain in his side and a cough which was often severe. William Deming stated that he was the owner of the shop where Andrew worked. Andrew had a bad cough and a pain in his left side. He continued to work when he was able until about 8 months prior to his death. Andrew Thompson died March 16, 1874, in Holland, Michigan and was buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery on March 18, 1874, as Henri Andrew Thompson. Military records state that cause of death was pulmonary consumption. Mary Thompson (Thomson) remarried on March 10, 1885, to John Williams, age 44, son of James Williams and Eliza Applebee.
