Funeral Services for Dick H. Vande Bunte, former Ottawa county commissioner of schools who died suddenly in Lansing Thursday, were held in Holland on Monday. Burial was in Forest Grove cemetery. He was 57 years old.

Mr. Vande Bunte, school commissioner for eight years, from 1939 to 1947 was in Lansing on business when he suffered the attack at the city hall. He retired from the teaching profession in 1947 after 30 years of service, and at present was a salesman for the Schmidtman Co., of Manitowoc, Wis.

As school commissioner for the county he established a strong educational program for the rural schools. He introduced the plan of the helping teacher service in 1940. Ottawa was the second county in Michigan to adopt the plan.

Was State Leader

In 1943, Mr. Vande Bunte replaced the old truant officer system with the services of a guidance counselor. He also developed the monthly news bulletin which is now mailed out to all rural schools.

As a state leader, he served as president, secretary and treasurer, and vice president of the State Association of County School Commissioners. He also served on the curriculum planning committee of the department of public instruction and the committee on rural areas.

Beginning his school career at Olive Center, he also taught at Forest Grove and Vriesland. After nine years as Jamestown school principal, he served Hudsonville as superintendent of schools before becoming school commissioner for the county.

Surviving are the wife, Emma; three daughters, Marian of Denver; Vera and Hazel at home; a son, Lewis; two grandchildren; three sisters and a brother.
