Johannes Van Lente

At about 9:30 Sunday evening, Johannes Van Lente died at his home at 256 West 10th Street after a lingering illness with dropsy, aged 76 years. Deceased was one of the early pioneers in this community, and was the founder of the famous Van Lente Singing School. He was well known in this city and community, and leaves a large circle of friends. Johannes Van Lente was born in the Netherlands, in Zwolle, in the province of Overijsel, and came to this country in the fall of 1847. He has lived in this city ever since. Dr. Van Lente enlisted in 1862, in Co. I of the 25th Michigan Infantry, and served until the close of the war in 1865.

In 1866, he was united in marriage with Jantje Bouma, who survives him. Besides the widow, he is survived by the following children: Mrs. J. De Graff, Mrs. J. Vander Hill, Mrs. A. Van Ry, Frederick J. and Ralph Van Lente.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at one o’clock from the 4th Reformed Church, the Rev. H. J. Veldman and Dr. N. M. Steffens officiating.

(Mr. Van Lente was buried in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.)
