Coopersville Observer, January 8, 1904 Fell Dead E. H. Walcott Dies Suddenly in a Muskegon Restaurant Ate His Dinner And Was About to Pay for It When the Summons Came. Was an Old Soldier And Had Come to Muskegon to be Examined for an Increase in pension. This community was shocked Wednesday afternoon when the news came that Elijah H. Walcott, an old and highly respected soldier and citizen of this community, had dropped dead in the Bismarck restaurant in Muskegon shortly after 1 o’clock, as he was about to pay the cashier for his dinner. Death was due to heart disease. Mr. Walcott went to Muskegon Wednesday forenoon on the Interurban car to be examined for an increase in pension. After his examination was concluded, he was informed that his heart was very weak, and to avoid all unnecessary exertion. He went directly to the restaurant and ate a hearty dinner. Decedent is survived by a widow, two sons and one daughter. He was 65 years of age and served as a private in Company D, Tenth Regiment, Michigan Cavalry. The coroner’s jury in the case of Elijah Walcott, who dropped dead in the Bismarck restaurant in Muskegon last week Wednesday afternoon, returned a verdict of death by the bursting of the left ventricle of the heart. The body was brought to Coopersville for burial Thursday morning. Mr. Walcott is survived by a widow and three children, Archie of Big Rapids, and Horace and Nellie who reside at home. Walcott was born in Canada but came to Michigan before the Civil War. He enlisted in the Tenth Michigan Cavalry and served through the war. After its close he came to Coopersville, in which vicinity he has since lived. The funeral was held Saturday forenoon from his late residence, and was largely attended. Walcott was born near Chattam, Canada, October 28, 1838, and with his parents came to Michigan locating in the township of Wright, Ottawa County, in the year 1856. He resided in the same township until his death, which occurred January 6, 1904. He was the youngest of twelve children and is survived by one sister, Mrs. Avery, of West Falls, Erie County, New York. April 5, 1867, he was united in marriage to Marietta Hutchins, unto whom were born four children, Charlie, Horace, Nellie and Archie. Charlie died at the age of seven years. He was converted October 18, 1874, and united with the Free Methodist Church, of which he remained a member until his death. He had been a sufferer for several years from dyspepsia and valvular trouble of the heart, which caused his sudden death. He left home seemingly in his usual health in the morning to attend to some business in Muskegon, and shortly after noon his family was shocked to hear of his passing away without a moment’s warning. He had made his preparations and had often wished when his time came to leave this world, he might go suddenly. The funeral was held from his home, on Saturday, conducted by his pastor, C. F. DeFoe. The text was found in II Timothy, 4th chapter and 7th and 8thverses. The burial took place in Wells Cemetery in Wright Township.
