Peter A. Weatherwax Died at the Home of His Daughter Last Week Friday

Peter Andrew Weatherwax Ottawa county’s oldest citizen, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Blanchard, last week Friday morning. He was in his ninety-sixth year, having celebrated his ninety- fifth birthday anniversary July 1, 1909. Mrs. Blanchard had cared for him during his declining years.

Mr. Weatherwax had been a resident of this county for more than sixty years, having lived the greater part of the time in Lamont. Seven years ago he moved to Coopersville, and until within a few years ago was able to be out on the streets every day.

Peter A. Weatherwax was born in Peru, Clinton County, New York, in the year 1814. He was one of a family of nine children, one of whom, Mrs. Margaret Lair, of Brooklyn, age 86, still survives him.

In 1844 he came to Michigan and he located in Lamont, then known as Steel’s Landing. On April 5, 1846, he was married to Miss Jane Steele, and to them were born six children, one son and five daughters, one dying in infancy.

During his sixty-six years’ residence in Michigan, a greater part of it was spent in Lamont, from which place he came to Coopersville about seven years ago, where his death took place February 11, 1910, at the age of 95 years, seven months and ten days.

He leaves one sister, Mrs. Margaret Lair, aged eighty-six years, of Adrian; one son, John Weatherwax, of Grand Rapids, and four daughters, Mrs. Louisa Miller of Lamont, Miss Margaret Weatherwax, of Grandville, Mrs A. J. Cyford of Alameda, California, and Mrs. Mary Blanchard of this place.
