Michael Blaszczyk, Metz Pioneer, Dies After Long Illness
Death claimed Michael W. Blaszczyk, aged 74 years, and a pioneer resident of Metz, at 3:45 o'clock Friday, August 9th,
at his home, his passing culminating a prolonged illness extending over the past three years.
Mr. Blaszczyk was born in Wolenice, Poland, on September 6, 1865. His marriage to Josephine Psikus, who survives him,
took place on April 23, 1893, at Vansbeck, Germany. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Blaszczyk resided for two
years at Hamburg, Germany, later coming to this country and settling near Metz where they have lived for the past 45
years . While still a resident of Europe Mr. Blaszczyk served three years in the Prussian army. After his arrival
here he entered the employ of the Detroit and Mackinaw Railroad Company as section foreman which position he filled
for 42 years. He was a member of St. Dominic Church at Metz.
Surviving Mr. Blaszczyk besides his widow are 13 children, Joseph, Theophil, Stanislaus, Sylvester, and Bernard, of
Detroit; John of Rogers City, Michael Jr. of Metz, Mrs. Magdalene Schudzinsky, Mrs. Mary Hintz, Mrs. Viola Verecke,
Mrs. Cecilia Sundeline, and Sister Mary Crispine, of Detroit and Mrs. Helene Krebs of Alpena. A half-sister, Mrs.
Mary Krych of Detroit, and two half-brothers. Frank and Steve Konieczny of Metz, also survive.
Funeral services were held at 9 o'clock on Monday morning from St. Dominic Church at Metz, Rev. Joseph Gorski officiating,
Interment was in the church cemetery.
Acting as pallbearers were the six sons of the deceased, Joseph, John Theophil, Sylvester, Bernard, and Michael Jr.
Among out-of-town relatives and friends in attendance at the services were Mr. and Mrs Louis Defraine, Tawas City;
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Krebs and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gaylord of Alpena, and Sister Mary Thersilla of Detroit.

Rites for Leo Crooks Held in Millersburg
Leo Clyde Crooks, age 53, was laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery, Millersburg, Wednesday, March 20th, following services
held at the Methodist Church there, with Rev. Paul Cargo officiating.
Mr. Crooks' death occurred at his home March 17th, after an illness of several months duration. He was entered in the
University Hospital, Ann Arbor, the latter part of December for treatment and returned to his home in February. He was
taken to Ann Arbor again the first of March for a check-up and had been at home since that time.
Born in Vassar, Mr. Crooks came to Millersburg as a child and was married there May 30th, 1920, to Leora Moore. He was
employed as section foreman at Millersburg and later at LaRocque by the D&M railway. Following their marriage he and Mrs.
Crooks lived in Millersburg and for a number of years at the Hammond Coast Guard Station. Mr. Crooks was a member of the
Millersburg Methodist Church and the Gleaner Lodge.
Surviving besides his widow are two daughters, Mrs. Arnon Kirkindall of Millersburg and Miss Jean Crooks of Detroit. He
also leaves two sisters, Mrs. George Nokes, Millersburg and Mrs. Adam Ceglarek, Flint, and four brothers, Clayton and
Carl and Harry and Glenn of Flint.
Mr. Crooks was held in high esteem in the community in which he lived and the funeral services were largely attended.
Vocal numbers were rendered by Mr. and Mrs. I.S. Devitt, Floyd Devitt and Mrs. Neil Freel, who were accompanied at the piano
by Mrs. F. B. Mills. Pallbearers were George Russell, Ferris Fitch, Thomas and George Crow, Ray Milbocker and Clinton Maynard.
In attendance from out of town were Miss Jean Crooks of Detroit, Mrs. and Mrs. Adam Ceglarek, Mrs. and Mrs. Glen Crooks, Harry Crooks,
and Percy Harrison of Flint, Nelson Berry of Saginaw, Mrs. James Schultz, Mrs. martin Schultz and Mrs. Clifford Ferris of Alpena and
Mrs. Dave Green, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Flewelling, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Minier, Mr. and Mrs. LeFave and Henry Crooks of Onaway.

William J. Doherty, 69, Onaway Resident for 40 Years, Buried Sat.
Funeral services for William J. Doherty, 69. of Onaway, were held from St. Paul's Church Saturday morning at 9 o'clock
with the Rev. Fr. Joseph Culligan officiating.
Mr. Doherty had been in ill health for several years due to a heart ailment, and death came on Wednesday, August 7th, at
the Onaway Receiving Hospital where he had been taken for treatment three weeks ago.
Born in Canada, May 14, 1871, William Doherty came to Michigan at the age of four years. He has been a resident of this
community for the past 40 years. Following his marriage in 1902 he and Mrs. Doherty made their home in Onaway. Mrs.
Doherty passed away in 1919.
Surviving Mr. Doherty are four daughters and one son, namely: Mrs. Thomas Rudolph, Conover, Wis; Mrs. Wallace Seyfert,
Eagle River, Wis.; Mrs. Ernest Zbanek, and Miss Thelia Doherty, Detroit; and James Doherty whose whereabouts are unknown,
He also leaves five grandchildren.
Interment was in the St. Paul Cemetery and acting pallbearers were: E.T. Burns, Albert Ellenberger, James Noon, Joe Harworth,
George Goupell and Mr. Bray.
Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were Mrs. Thomas Rudolph of Conover, Wis.; Mrs. Wallace Seyfert of
Eagle River, Wis.; and Mrs. Ernest Zibanek of Detroit.

Year Old Son Of Mr. And Mrs. Kiogima Dies
Mitchell John Kiogima Jr., the one-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Kiogima Sr.. passed away last Friday evening follwing
a prolonged illness which had recently developed into pneumonia.
Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Chaney Funeral Chapel with Rev. William Young officiating.
Interment was in the Waverly Cemetery.
Surviving besides the parents is a sister, age three years. The maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Frasier, and the maternal
great-grandmother, also survive.

Posen Youth Is Killed When Car Blows Out Tire
Eugene Kroll, of Posen, age 21, found dying after car crashes near Metz.
Eugene Kroll, the 21-year-old son of Mrs. Andrew Kroll of Posen, was killed Sunday night about nine o'clock south of Metz
when his car skidded into the ditch near the Albrecht Kowalewski corner. Walter Przybyla, living near the scene of the accident,
saw the lights of the car crossways of the road and on investigation found Kroll in a dying condition. "Guess I'm done for," was
about all that the young man said before he passed away. He suffered a broken neck.
An investigation made by Deputy Pat Sheedle showed that Kroll was driving towards Posen when evidently a front tire blew out
and his car went into the ditch on the left-hand side of the road. He was thrown from the wreck and his body was found twenty-five
or thirty feet from the car. In the darkness searchers almost overlooked him, when they to the scene.
Eugene had been working on the shore road. He had been off work for a couple of weeks due to a minor injury but was to go
back to work Monday. His family had not seen him since he left home on Sunday about noon. Eugene had borrowed a car, a Ford
convertible, from Stanley Woloszek, and had evidently been to the vicinity of Metz to see friends.
Surviving the young man, besides his mother, are three sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Dehring of Hawks, Mrs. Martha Pechmann of
Milwaukee, and Anne Kroll of Posen, and five brothers, Benjamin of Detroit, Stanley of Maple Ridge, Alpena County; Edward,
Anthony and Andrew of Posen.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning from St. Casimir's Church at Posen, Fr. Szyper officiating at the services.

Accident Takes Life of Harry Kucharski, Jr.
Funeral services for the six-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kucharski, Harry Jr.. were held on Saturday, July 20th,
from the St. Ignatius Church at Rogers City. Rev. C.T. Skowronski officiated and interment followed in Rogers City Memorial Park.
Those acting as pallbearers were Leonard Crawford, Wallace Mulka, Clarence Idalski, and Clarence Kelley.
Harry, while playing about the barn at his home in Moltke, on Sunday, July 14th, was kicked in the stomach by a horse.
He was taken to the Alpena General Hospital soon after, and passed away there on Wednesday, July 17th. Harry attended the
Pomeranke School in Moltke.
Surviving are his parents, three sisters, Betty Jean, Ann Marie, Marjorie, and one brother, Arthur.
Out-of-town relatives in attendance at the services were Mr. and Mrs. Michael Marzean of Alpena, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Merrill of Cheboygan.

Mrs. Etta Lown Passed Away On Wednesday, July 30th
Mrs. Etta Lown, aged 58, died Saturday, July 30th, at Millersburg, following a stroke. She had come to Michigan
for the summer from her home in Magalia, Calif., and had been ill the past eight weeks, six of which were spent in
the hospital at Petoskey. She had been prior to her residence in California, a resident of Millersburg for many years.
Etta Schuler was born in Genesee County and lived in Thetford prior to her marriage in 1897 to Amos Lown. Mr. and
Mrs. Lown lived in Tuscola County, later moving to the north where Mr. Lown followed his trade in the mills. With the
passing of the lumber business they settled in Millersburg where their family was born and raised. Mr. and Mrs. Lown
acquired a farm and home there. At one time they, with their son, Elmer, had a substantial general store business,
which terminated with the disastrous fire which destroyed the main business block. After this loss they moved to
Hillman and later to California where Mr. Lown engaged in the mill business. He died in 1939.
Surviving Mrs. Lown are her daughter, Thelma Sharp, of Magalia, and son Alva, of Stockton, Calif. Patricia Lown and
Colleen Sharp, and Virgil and Wilbur Lown are grandchildren. Anna Nowland of Long Lake, and Archie Schuler and Lee Schuler
of Millersburg, are sister and brothers. Mrs. Lown's mother, Mrs. Alice Curtis of Millersburg, also survives her daughter.
Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church at Millersburg Friday afternoon, August 2nd, at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. Wm. Young
officiating. Mrs. Edward Vallee, Mrs. George Atkins, Marie Russell and Mrs. Homer Robins sang The Rosary, Old Rugged Cross,
Beautiful Isle of Somewhere. Acting as pallbearers were Messrs. Jones, Valley, Leach, Mills, Whitsitt and John Smith.
Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.
Relatives and friends present at the funeral services from out of the village were Mr. and Mrs. Dick Linton of Mt. Pleasant,
Mr. and Mrs. Morris Ayliff of Birch Run, Mr. and Mrs. Alva Lown and sons of Stockton, Calif.
Mrs. Lown was a woman especially devoted to her family and was a neighbor to be admired. She made a host of friends
during the years of her residence here who mourn their loss and extend their sympathy to the family in their bereavement.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Marie Tulgetske Thursday Afternoon
Mrs. Marie Elizabeth Tulgetske, mother of Mrs. Charles Schalk and Adolph and Herman Tulgetske of this city, passed away on
Monday, March 18th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eveline Repkey of Detroit.
Mrs. Tulgetske was born Marie Sorgenfrei in Germany October 14th, 1858. She came to this country as a young girl and following
her marriage to Fred Tulgetske lived in Moltke for a number of years. Her husband died some 35 years ago and she made her home
in Rogers City for a time, leaving about twelve years ago to reside in Detroit.
She leaves to mourn her loss four daughters, Mrs. Repkey, Mrs. Schalk, Mrs. Gordon Jones of Windsor and Mrs. Reginald George
of South Bolton, Que., and her sons Adolph and Herman. Another son Fred has passed away. There are also 15 grandchildren,
29 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon of last week at the Shirtum Funeral Home at 2 o'clock, with Rev. William J.
Lichau officiating.
