1967 - Conservation Department Gets New Vessel...Results of City Elections...Army Pvt. Robert B. Barry Completes Advance Infantry Training From Presque Isle County Advance and Onaway Outlook April 6, 2017

  
CAPTION: For many years, the Conservation Department was literally missing the boat in its efforts
to carry out intensive fisheries studies on the Great Lakes.  That was all to change in July 1967
when a new, modern equipped vessel was to be launched.  In other Onaway News, the final tabulation
of votes for the Onaway city election were completed. A total of 222 votes were cast: 43 percent
of eligible voters in the city voted.  There were three in the race for commissioner Robert Tucker, 
Newton W. Chapman and William Ormsbee.  Tucker was clearly the people's choice, garnering 50 percent of 
the votes.  Chapman won the other seat.  In the race for constable, candidate Newton Chapman Jr. received
167 votes, while the rest went to various other write-ins.  The proposal for a five-man commission carried
148 to 72, meaning it would be on a future ballot.  City clerk Fred Warner said the turnout for the election
was better than expected.  In other Onaway News, Army Pvt. Robert H. Barry, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. 
Robert Barry, Onaway, completed eight weeks of advance infantry training March 25. Ft. Ord, California.
