From Presque Isle County Advance and Onaway Outlook November 22, 2018 |
CAPTION: The year 1978 was not going to be a record year in the annals of Onaway
area deer hunting history. Fewer hunters saw fewer deer. Ed Pike, Department of
Natural Resources (DNR) conservation officer said: "It seems to me that the number
of hunters is down. There is usually a direct relationship between the two figures.
The result of last year's hard winter won't be felt until next winter. The fawns
that starved last winter aren't a significant factor in this year's kill. And the
losses due to starvation in Presque Isle County were minimal." Jim Bancroft reported
that few deer had been brought in for checking at the DNR Millersburg equipment
station. In other news, Cardinal boys' basketball coach John Krage read the rules with
members of the 1978 basketball squad...the Indian River Inn was advertising a Thanksgiving
buffet from noon until 8 p.m. the buffet included a Hawaiian ham, battered fried chicken
and Icelandic cod, all for the price of $7.95.
