From Presque Isle County Advance and Onaway Outlook March 29, 2018 |
CAPTION: Forty-two people gathered at St. Paul Community Hall for a public hearing
regarding the proposed sale of the courthouse building to the Onaway Community Federal Credit
Union in 1978. Of the 14 speakers herd, seven were Onaway residents. Five were in favor of the city
retaining and restoring the old courthouse and two were in favor of selling to the
credit union. Mayor Robert Nelson said the old building holds sentimental and historical
value for all area residents but the great amount of money needed to restore it, $125,000 or
more, was not available. And even if restored, heating and maintenance costs would be a major
expense for city taxpayers. Above, is a picture in the courtroom of a wood stove that was
used to keep the Onaway Boxing Club warm. In other Onaway news, Ed Pike was assigned by the
Michigan Department of Natural Resources to serve as conservation officer in the Onaway
area. Pike, 27, was a graduate of Central Michigan University.
