This week's bit of history comes from a photo taken at the intersection of State Street and M-95 (now M-211).
The building in the photo has had many handles over the years. It was Chandler's Mercantile, the Mahoney
Hardware, Hart's Hardware, (the owner in this photo), Burns International Implement Hardware, Jeffrey's
Hardware (where I bought my first XL12 Homelite chain saw), the Great Northern Drug, Ben Franklin and is
a resale shop today. In 1898 when the need for a new school arose, some of the children attended school
in the top story of this building, the Friends Church, the Hose House No. 2 on First Street and rooms
rented at the Colonial Hotel, while the new school was being built. I have a photo of the top story being
torn down. Note the sign on the side of the building, five miles to the Onaway State Park, Schell's Cottages
and Cabins, CCC Camp Black Lake and M-95. Just wish I knew the gentleman on the vintage bulldozer. The photo
came from Karan and Carolyn Pregitzer.
